We had the good fortune of connecting with Gaby Arroyo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gaby, we are hopeless romantics and so we’d like to start by asking you about how you met the love of your life?
Mauricio and I went to the same high school. It was a small school and everyone knew each other. Mauricio and I had different group of friends and some in common but we were never friends. We graduated and went to different colleges, until one day a friend in common invited us to a high school reunion and after 4 years of not seeing each other, Mauricio and I met again with different eyes. Since then we are together! Three years dating, one year engaged, 15 years of marriage, two beautiful daughters and a dog.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Pulga’s Heart Project is a nonprofit organization that my husband, Mauricio Olaya and I created 6 years ago to support families with kids living with congenital heart defects (CHDs) after experiencing it ourselves. We want to show that there are people who cares about you while you are in the hospital with your heart warrior besides your family and friends. We want to be an ear that listens and can relate with the situation you are dealing with. Every year during the Holiday season we give a Build-a-Bear reindeer to every family in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) at Medical City Children’s Hospital, with a coffee and a gas gift card to help with expenses and thanks to a very dear family to us, we also give every family in the Unit a Holiday blanket and PJ. We also try to restock the hospital’s closet with sensory toys and baby gear.
Another project that we’ve been working on is raising funds to give nurses form the PCICU at Medical City Children’s Hospital the opportunity to attend educational conferences to enhance their nursing skills specific to critical care and children with CHDs. Last year, thanks to all our supporters, we were able to donate $3,000! But this year is going to be different, due to the current situation of the 2020 Pandemic, we are not going to be able to make the donations this year. We couldn’t do our garage sales where we raise most of the funds we need. But we understand that these days everything has changed and it’s ok! We hope for better times!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are very family oriented people and we really don’t know the trendy spots but what we do when family or friends are visiting is taking them to breakfast to First Watch, our favorite restaurant to start the day. Then we always go either the Arboretum or a tour to the AT&T stadium, which is a must if you are a Cowboys fan. Another area we love is downtown Grapevine, full of character and history. There you can take a train ride to the Fort Worth Stockyards and go to the rodeo. And there is always the history part, a visit to the First Floor Museum in Downtown Dallas.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We are so grateful for The Pulga’s Heart Project supporters! All of our family, friends, friends of friends, people who hear about our cause and is willing to donate either money or used clothes and other things for the garage sales we do every year to raise money. Without them our project could not be done. It’s a teamwork! And we are so thankful for them, for sharing our cause and ride this adventure with us.
