We had the good fortune of connecting with Erial Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erial, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of the organization has been my family, board members, and friends. They show up for me even when I’m unable to sometimes. They keep me going and maintain the goal and mission of Erial’s College Mission. The success would not have been without them. Before our annual events, my peers and relatives are eager to donate, give their time, and resources to get the word out about the opportunities of the organization. The other factors of keeping ECM successful are staying committed and having various perspectives to continue the mission. It’s true, others that you value and respect perspectives matter!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I currently work at the front desk for a massive healthcare corporation. I’m also obtaining my masters of healthcare leadership and management from University of Texas at Dallas to become a practice manager. I’m most proud of obtaining my bachelor’s degree during the pandemic, winning the MLK Jr Visionary Leader Scholarship award, and of course starting this wonderful organization almost five years ago. I just began my professional career due to just graduating from undergrad in December, and got blessed with a healthcare opportunity during the pandemic. The journey has not been easy while maintaining my personal and professional career. But I continually pray each day for guidance on this journey. I’ve overcome these challenges by having mentors and sticking closely to those who’ve come before me and have similar goals and passions. The lessons I’ve learned along the way are to enjoy the journey, be nice to myself, it’s okay to say no, and embrace all the good and bad. I want the world to know about the organization. I want all the scholars to keep going, someone sees you along your journey and supports you. You are not alone.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Itinerary Friday night: go to a bar or hookah lounge in Addison, TX
Saturday: Brunch, bar hopping, concert, glass making course, State Fair Andretti’s (any activity to get me out of the house)
Sunday: Sunday Funday/ brunch, cooking dinner

I’m still exploring the cities, but it’s so many places such as museums, bars, and more!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to Erin Smith, Shanese Williams, and Lisa Smith, without these women there would be no Erial’s College Mission! These women collectively are the driving force of where we are today, and how far we’ve come. They are the epitome of black girl magic and shine radiance wherever they go. They are gifts from God!
