We had the good fortune of connecting with Equiano Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Equiano, what do you attribute your success to?
I find success in someone finding meaning in my photography. I use to focus on wanting to create work that a lot of people would like to see. I learned that if I can be happy with what I am producing and love the work that I do, then others will too.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Definitely hasn’t been smooth. So many times in the beginning, I didn’t know what I was doing. Sometimes I went months without a gig and felt like selling my equipment just to make some money back. Other times I was too focused on how good other photographers were and tried too hard to imitate their style and work. I think the biggest tip I learned is to focus on personal development. “How can I challenge myself?” Experimenting with shoots like levitation or mixed media allowed me not to get discouraged and keep photography as a passion of mine. Loving what I do is the most important to overcoming any struggles that come along the way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So I am definitely not the type of person to go to Deep Ellum for the bars and clubs, however, I still enjoy the area. I love live music and the low vibe and open mics all around the area have me visiting often. I am also big on nature, the best trails I found so far are in Plano and my favorite one I would take someone to first is Arbor Hills Nature Preserve. One of my last favorite spots is Art Park in my area, Trinity Groves. The strip has so many options for food and activities that it is always a fun time with a group of friends and after some good food, I like to take a walk along the pedestrian bridge.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family deserves the biggest credit in my life. They have been supporting my business ever since the first camera I picked up. My sister especially trusted me with some important shoots from her birthdays to her first maternity shoot.

Even though I was still an amateur she insisted on paying me, and that is when I thought maybe I could make this a small business of mine. If it wasn’t for the encouragement from my family, I probably would have given up many times already.
