We had the good fortune of connecting with Elijah Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elijah, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
It all started…”How Cliché?” I was always the person that would fix the computers in my household. Them, “Why is the internet running slow?” Reply, “I will take a look at it.” Them, “Come hook up the printer.” Reply, “Alright.” Then starting my college career, I even majored in Computer Science. During my time in college, people would often ask me, how you know so much about CARS, then I would just day I love cars. Then that passion drove into technology. Then of course, people started to ask me technical questions about phones, tablets, laptops, and anything else you can think of. I guess that aura stayed with me after graduating college.
After college and starting my “career”, I got big into house automation and transforming “regular” homes into “smart” homes. I enjoyed educating people on what a Smart Home is and what steps it takes to get there. AskEliAnything(On Instagram) grew into the business of Nerd-Ifi: Smart Home Installations. I gradually started to help people automate their homes and become “one” with their homes. I install doorbells, security systems, integrate homes, and may other things. I also teach my customers how to operate the new found skill of their home and I leave the door open just in case they have any questions.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
AskEliAnything was the start of it all. I claimed all the names, domains, and anything else I could think of to secure my business. I was pushing out YouTube videos and started to try and make a name for myself in the Tech-YouTube Game, now I mainly stick to instagram, for now.
Nerd-Ifi is what you can consider to be an off-spring of what initially started. I started doing smart home things around my house and said “Wow, Imagine if I could do this for other people.” I basically started to hint at people around me that they should let me install this and that around their homes, and eventually they did. I think was sets me apart from other people in my spaces that I am willing to do all the research, find you the cheapest prices, teach you about each individual product, and leave that line of communication open. And I offer my services a little lower than the competition because I have a true love for what I do.
I would say that breaking into this space wasn’t easy, it wasn’t hard either. Within a space like this, I believe that you have to know what you’re talking about because people are going to believe AND if you install a security system in their house their lives are in your hands. Like I said, that why I enjoy doing the research before presenting a plan to customer. Technology is what wakes me up in the morning.
What lessons have I learned along the way? Hm, don’t rush the process, real the manuals, watching.a YouTube video of someone who already installed doesn’t make you less, and everything is a learning process. I remember when I got my first major/big house to do; I tried to do everything in a day. I learned my lesson that day, I was so tired.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend was coming to town next week, I would definitely take them to Zatar in Deep Ellum. I love that place. Texas Roadhouse and Rodeo Goat if we are going to nice greasy session of eating. Bitter End/Wok Hard if we want a drink and some music to vibe to. I also feel like each Starbucks has a different mood to it, I would probably take them to one just to get our day started to talk business and what not.
Things to try and check out if they did come: Reunion Tower, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Texas Live/ATT Stadium, and walking about downtown Dallas. And maybe the Bishop Arts District.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to recognize my family first and foremost. I would not be the nerd I am today if it wasn’t form them. I would like to thank the friends that I was fortunate enough to make during my college years that recognized my passion for technology and asked me every question under the sun. My significant other played a major role as well, her push and words of encouragement definitely helped me shape and mold the business that I have today.
These people, individually played a vital role in helping find what it is I like to do besides watching tv all day. I still get phone calls and texts from them asking me questions about the latest and “if its worth it.” I am always here to answer. Now you just have to pay me a dollar per question!
Other: My personal instagram is publicenemy1__ , I have a very interesting story on there.
