We had the good fortune of connecting with Deana Hinchcliff and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deana, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Consistency is probably the biggest factor in my success and my ability to make a living doing what I enjoy. Once I was able to set up a dedicated studio it made it much easier to stay creative be productive. I get up every day and go in the studio. Sometimes not for long stretches, but I work on something. Staying current with social media platforms and online tools is also necessary. Certainly with the onslaught of online platforms it is impossible to use them all, but I have found a couple that work with my business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a leather artist. It is one of the most amazing materials to work with because you can do just about anything with it. I began as a pyrographic artist…burned illustrations on leather. Native American influences were predominant in most of my early work and still play a part today. It has been a slow and sometimes frustrating journey from the occasional local festival to doing regional and national shows today. The work I am most proud of are my sculptural pieces. They are truly unique to me and what I do. It is (almost) never easy to put yourself out there creatively. But the longer I do this, the easier it is to let go of the self-doubt and talk about the process and the story behind each piece.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to have more than one creative avenue. I am a sculptor, but I’m also a functional leather worker. It helps keep things fresh and it gives me a more well rounded body of work.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My partner Lora is my biggest supporter and cheerleader. Knowing she is behind me 100% gives me a lot more freedom to work in an unconventional field.

Without that, what I do would probably be little more than a hobby.
