We had the good fortune of connecting with Davante Peters and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Davante, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my business was certainly multifaceted. I know there are great companies to work for i unfortunately, or fortunately, never have felt fulfilled working any job that ive been employed at so i knew early on that the entrepreneurial path was my destiny. Furthermore, i didn’t want to create just any business just to get money; I felt the necessity to create a business out of my lifestyle so it wouldn’t feel like work. With “Tha Alkaline Hour” I documented my health journey and was able to turn my journey into a company.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Outside of business, politics and activism I happen to be a music artist. My stage name is “Brotha SHAWT”, my subject matter isnt the same that main stream artist nor artist in my city generally speak about. Since young people lack positive role models in the entertainment industry, I like to be that individual. My journey as an artist has not been an easy rode, due to the cost of being an artist and competing in this industry is exponentially expensive; i have not been in the financial position to be consistent until recently.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friends form out of town came and wanted to visit the city, I’d take them to places like Oak Cliff, to give them a tour of my side of town. I’d take them not only to my store “Tha Alkaline Hour” but also to places like Vegan Food House and other vegan restaurants because i’m vegan. I’d let them see Deep Ellum and other places like South Dallas, Joppi and other predominately Black Neighborhoods ad then take them to far north Dallas to expose the contradictions that we live in. I dont really hang out much.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have a long list of shout outs I know I will forget some people but i’d want to shout out people like John Wiley Price & Vincent Hall for being mentors, Yafeuh Balogun for pushing me to be a leader, Marcus X Russell for showing love, George Anderson for having my back and holding down my store while I campaign, my little sister Shaylah Peters for being there for me and holding her brother down and dealing with me, all my customers for believing in me, supporting and changing my life. I’d like to shout out Cyletha Gooley or “Lythal” for the time we spent together because I have to give her credit. I want to also shout out all my supporters, fans and people who’ve donated to me.
