We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniyal Awan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniyal, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
If there is one thing working in commercial real estate has taught us in the past seven years, it is that the ability to truly and effectively visualize the final shape of any blueprint is extremely challenging and mistakes in the early design phase can be very costly during construction. Whether you are a seasoned design professional or a first-time owner builder, this challenge is common across all architectural design work.
My brother, Hamiz and I have always been committed to innovating around challenges we face everyday. Nothing else was commercially available in the industry that gives a one-to-one scale walkable experience of the dimensions in floor plans and blueprint designs. This led to the idea of creating a platform that easily displays any floor plan onto a large walkable screen, where users can experience true dimensions of their designs and correct any imperfections and constraints before going into construction.
Our product simply uses a standard permit set of any building or floor plan and displays that using our patent-pending LED technology, saving time and avoiding costly change orders in future. You can bring your whole design team to collaborate during a live session at our state-of-the-art design studio in Dallas.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Nothing in life that is worth it comes easy. Coming from a supportive entrepreneurial family, when we faced a consistent issue in our construction business, we knew we had the ability to not only find a solution to our problem but help others with it as well. Our team often faced issues with clearly understanding a blueprint and getting a sense of what the final product would look like. We often experienced change orders which added to the net cost of every project we worked on. Having gone through this experience ourselves, we knew people outside the industry would be facing the same issues when building their own homes.
Coming from a place of empathy for a problem and keen to find a solution, we slowly began developing the idea of 1to1plans. Almost 3 years later, we will be opening our doors to the public early June. Through our product, we want homeowners to be able to get a better understanding of what their home would look like and we would like to help contractors and project managers to facilitate a better understanding between them and their clients.
In developing this product over the last three years, we have had to learn a great deal of patience. We have come to learn that great things take time. In order to create a great product, we wanted to hire the right people. People we could trust to help us bring our vision to life, people we looked up to, and we could learn from. Once we established the right team, things started to fall in place. Overall, this has been a challenging but rewarding experience. Watching our studio come to life is truly one of the greatest things we could witness
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Any time someone comes to visit me, there are two places I always bring them to. One hasn’t seen developed Texas if they haven’t been to Legacy West.. It’s one of the few places in the city where you can find urban european architecture and streetscape. The design and architecture of the area is absolutely unparalleled, in my opinion, and a must see for all my visitors!
Once we have walked around and built up an appetite, our next stop would be the newly launched Nusr-Et Steakhouse. There is nothing like a nice day of shopping capped with a world-class steak meal. If you’re ever in Dallas, I strongly recommend you check them out!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We would like to give a shout out to Matt Risinger from the Build show. Matt is a custom luxury home builder based out of Austin, Texas and has his Youtube channel dedicated to building science innovation in the construction industry. Our tradesmen are huge fans of his work and love to follow him for the latest construction trends and tips. As someone who is constantly bringing in effective and innovative products to the construction industry, Risinger truly deserves a shout out from us.
We would like to give a shout out to Tanja McAleavey from Younger Partners. Tanja is a one-stop-shop for all our real estate needs. She was able to scout for the perfect location for our design studio in Dallas and has been extremely helpful to the creation of this design platform.
We would also like to give a shout out to Mark Hoffman at Ford Audio and Visual Dallas. Mark has been of tremendous help in bringing his technical knowledge and helping figure out the equipment needs of our design studio.
