We had the good fortune of connecting with Crystal Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Crystal, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I speak from an authentic place. This allows me to spend time connecting with my ideal client at every touchpoint. It is impossible to connect with “everyone”, nor should you want to. The goal is to connect with people who want your product or service. My archetype is a blend of Royalty and Visionary. My ideal clients are looking for that specific approach to branding. For example, it would be a waste of time and resources for me to speak like the Caregiver archetype. There is no way I could even sell that because it is so far from who I naturally am.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The thing about GenX is we were raised to go to college, graduate, and start that corporate career! Ok, yeah. No. I can’t remember not being a creative. I took almost 20 years of corporate recruiting experience and turned that into my branding career. Initially, I was working solely with musicians. Fortunately, they are my friends, so they trusted me. Watching their approach to working with the top 1% of the industry’s artists taught me more than college ever could. Today I consult on public art projects for non-profits with operating budgets of $1M+. One thing I know for sure, a solid network of people who trust you and can cosign your work is more valuable than a degree- and I have two of those.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly? We’d never leave Oak Cliff. It’s where I’m from and where I live. My best friend lives here too, so she already knows what I know. But, we’d definitely grab meals from Vegan Food House. We’d definitely eat sweets from both Kookie Haven and Kessler Baking Studio. Mostly though, we’d binge on tacos from every taco stand in the area, starting with Taqueria El Si Hay.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Shoutout is dedicated to my mother, Zanell J. Perry. She survived the segregated south via rural Arkansas, and lived to vote for an African American POTUS; and, see a woman who looks like her make history as the first African American VPOTUS. While I do not have children, I see her legacy in the thousands of children she educated across 2 states in 40 plus years. I’m very clear that my life’s work is a distant second to hers.
