We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlise Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charlise, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process for starting my own business was I wanted to justify my means, use my knowledge, and gifts. First, I wanted to do it the right and legal way. When I published my first book, I thought about forming a business. I definitely had to research and set up my business right. Working in the corporate world has taught me some standards and discipline. If I can do the work for big corporations, I can definitely create and work for myself. Second, I researched the resources I needed. I do not have everything, so I use what I have now so that I can get to where I am going. For instance, I started with a free website, then connected my domain later, and upgraded my website when I was able to do so. I also took part in free challenges, free webinars, how to videos on YouTube. This helps with the cost of expenses, increased my skillset but I had to dedicate time to do this. Last, I also did an inventory list of what I am good at. I am always helping someone with something and giving knowledge, so I thought how I can turn this into a business. People will pay you for your expertise and services.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Lise’s Business Enterprise is a mix of services and products. I currently have two books out and working on three more. My books are of poems, short stories, and self-help guides. I also have merchandise available on my online store. My professional services lie in me being a Notary Public, Credit Repair Specialist, Startup Nonprofit Consultant, and a Virtual Facilitator. I grew to where I am today by the skills inventory list I did. I decided to do a few of them I can do professionally. I always help with credit repair, assist small nonprofits, and ask to share my knowledge for job preparations. I do my research. Prior to starting these services, I checked for state requirements or mandatory certifications. With upskilling I enhance my skills. It is not easy, especially since we are still in a pandemic. I have to continuously promote myself online and word of mouth. The main challenge is getting clients or customers. I have to build trust with people I do not know. I created a YouTube page where I continuously release videos about credit tips, nonprofit startups, or just answering questions.
My brand is a mix, but it is unique. I have a creative mind and if you use my service, I do for you as I would do for myself. I guarantee you will learn something new and be impressed by any of my services or products.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Deep Ellum and drive through downtown. Get some good BBQ from either Hard Eight BBQ in Coppell or Terry Black’s BBQ, or both.
Stop and get some drinks at Austin Avenue bar in Richardson, they have some good fried pickles too. Take my friend to my church on Sunday at Christ Community in Richardson.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother, father, and my son, Loron, who have instilled discipline, set life standards, and inspiration. Deshaun Walker of Deep Voice Radio, my husband, who continues to support me and encourage me in whatever I do. Aimee Robinson of Blown Away Adventures, who answers any questions I have, has helped me personally and professionally. Savoy Colbert of True Vine Resource Center, whom I admire, has helped me professionally and personally.
