We had the good fortune of connecting with Candace Nicholson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Candace, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
I believe that in life, you have to have faith. So the quote that comes to mind and one that I remind myself of everyday is to “Take a Leap of Faith!” That can be so hard. For me personally, starting a new business was scary because of the unknowns and the “what if’s.” With the help of those around me who gave me the extra push, I was able to look past my fears and step into my purpose. Doubts, fears and unknowns can find there way inside and keep us from doing great things. You can’t let that happen. That’s when you have to make the decision that no matter how scary the situation may seem, it’s time to take that risk, believe in yourself and Leap. It may be new territory, something out of your element or comfort zone but trust me, “Take that Leap of Faith.” It’s worth it. You’re worth it.

LoveCece is very unique and eclectic because I use a variety of materials, vibrant colors and designs. I bring those elements together to make pieces that can be simple everyday wear as well as pieces that are more out of the box and make a statement. I also make pieces that are afrocentric and steeped in tradition. That’s LoveCece, that’s what I’m known for, making unique, meaningful and wearable art. You see, I have always been a creative. From arts and craft projects for my home, making a special gift for family and friends, even photography, I love getting to use my creative mind. And that’s how LoveCece came about. Seeing that I had a lot of art supplies around my home, I had an idea I wanted to try, and that was to make a pair of earrings. So I grabbed some paint, a few wooden pieces, and a little while later, I did it! I was so proud of my new earrings that I shared my work on Facebook, and within minutes, I had friends asking how much I was selling them for…fast forward and I am now a business owner. It hasn’t all been easy though. Since this is my first business, there has been so much to learn. The creative part of it comes pretty easy to me even though every now and then I run into some roadblocks. Typically, I just use my imagination, sketch out the designs and they turn out well. Others, don’t turn out as well. With me being a perfectionist when it comes to my craft, especially if I’m making pieces for others, I have to make sure that I get it right. I’ve spent a lot of time taking classes, watching tutorials and a lot of trial and error. Then there is the behind the scenes, business side that can be difficult. Luckily, i’ve been able to take a few business classes and ask other small business owners and professionals for help. I’m still learning daily, because the learning never ends. One of my biggest challenge has been second guessing myself, but then again, I think every creative goes through that, right?! For me, I want everything to be perfect. I want every piece I make to make my customer feel loved, as if that particular piece was made just for them, because at the end of the day, it is. That’s what I want the world to know about LoveCece, everything I do, everything I make is from my heart and made with love and care. I will always have the desire to encourage and uplift people through my work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite things to do in Denton, even though it only comes once a year, is the Denton Jazz and Arts Fest. It’s so lively and there is so much to see and do. It would be fun to walk around, eat some great food, check out all of the creative vendors, then find a comfy spot in the grass and listen to live music. Mexican food is my all time favorite. I would definitly take my friends and family to my favorite taco spot, Boca 31. It is so incredibly delicious and I like trying their daily specials. After that we could take a walk around the square and check out all of the different shops. I also love visiting farmers markets, so it would also be a lot of fun to check out the Denton Community Market and the Four Seasons Market down the road in Flower Mound. There is so much talent around and where better to see it displayed and support other small business. The adventures around town are endless, but one last thing I think would be a lot of fun is spending the day at Little Elm Beach. We could pack up the car with food, snacks, all of the picnic essentials and spending the day relaxing by the water.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom Evelyn. She is my heart and my biggest cheerleader. I am beyond blessed to have a mother that believes in me and loves me the way that she does. She is the hardest working woman I know and has a heart for people. I hope that I can be half of the woman she is and that I make her proud. I also have family and best friends, who are more like family, in my circle that I get to do life with. They all inspire me in different ways and it’s my hope that I can encourage, support and inspire them as they all follow their dreams and pursue their purpose.
