We had the good fortune of connecting with Aubrey Campie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aubrey, what do you attribute your success to?
Customer service is a huge factor behind my success. Delivering a great product of course is key, but I think having spectacular customer service is really key. Sometimes providing great customer service is both mentally and physically exhausting, but it is SO rewarding whenever you see it pay off. Customer service also goes beyond great products, fast delivery, good return policies. One example of this is that everyone who orders from me gets a handwritten note on an actual handmade card from me, the maker. This is extraordinarily time-consuming for me, especially during busy times, but it ALWAYS delights my customers! To me, that is worth my hand cramping up sometimes!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I decided to start a business, it first was a way to work from home and be my own boss. I decided to sell handstamped jewelry because I was interested in working with aluminum, since it is hypoallergenic. At the time, I was SO tired of buying inexpensive jewelry that tarnished, turned my skin green, but didn’t want to pay hundreds of dollars for precious metals. So I started to research inexpensive metals to work with and aluminum stood out to me. Not only was inexpensive to work with, but it is also very hypoallergenic for most people, will not tarnish or turn skin green. So I just started to make jewelry in the metals and designs I liked and I found that a lot of people were looking for the same thing.
Of course, there are always so many challenges to starting a business and I’ve learned a lot over the years. Sometimes making ends meet means late nights and a pot of coffee. Over most major holidays, I am not super relaxed like most of my friends and family, because I work in retail I have to hustle during that time and that can be a bit isolating. Even working from home every day can be challenging and monotonous, but I have learned to really create a nice workspace at home and it has helped a lot with that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Depending on where they were coming from, I’d first have a barbeque out in my backyard, which has a pool and is so relaxing. Then after that, we might go shopping (IKEA, Nebraska Furniture Mart, an outdoor shopping mall), go to Deep Ellum for some drinks and some live music, Perot Museum, Dallas Arboretum, go sailing on Lake Ray Hubbard and walk around by the harbor there, eat at my favorite restaurant Dalrock Diner.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband deserves so much credit in my success. He is my biggest cheerleader and a fair critic of my work. He is always pushing me to be better, but so supportive of me all the time and I would not be where I am in my business without him.
