We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley and Kyle Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley and Kyle, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Our work balance has drastically shifted since we started our businesses. Both of us used to work full-time for different corporations in different cities and each commuted around 2 hours a day. This didn’t allow for much to spend with our 3 daughters, all 10 years and younger. Since opening the gallery and then a second business, we are able to balance work and family much more and our children constantly gain new and unique experiences through our work.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Ashley Smith’s art focuses on highlighting personality and emotional intelligence through portraiture and mural work. Kyle Smith’s art focuses on custom wood working, restorations, and mural work. The couple fully funded, opened, and operated the gallery after health concerns left them wanting more time with family. They went for it and although risky, it was the best decision they’ve ever made for their family. It was rather difficult to start the company from scratch and gain enough traction to remain operational. Through building relationships and nurturing creativity, The Clever Tiger has earned an amazing reputation, several awards, and has built an artistic community that will hopefully thrive for many years to come.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Elgin, Texas has an amazing downtown with alot to enjoy. I would take a friend for morning yoga at Body and Shine yoga, a picnic lunch in Memorial Park from Firewild Catering, and to buy a custom fit hat from Double R Hathouse.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The community of Elgin, Texas has been our biggest supporters throughout the process of opening businesses and navigating times of uncertainty. This includes support from the City of Elgin, Elgin Parks and Rec, Elgin Arts Association, neighboring businesses, and our valued artist and patrons. We would not be open and thriving without the continued support of each and every person that has helped to support the arts in Elgin.
