We had the good fortune of connecting with Aryn Michelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aryn, how do you define success?
As an independent, faith-based musician that specializes in niche pop music, success for me is defined very differently from how most people may define it in the music industry. For me, it comes down to this: Am I creating the music I know I’m supposed to be making? And is the thing I’m creating better than the last thing I did? That assessment tells me if I’m going in the right direction. At this point in my career, I don’t really concern myself with the hard numbers (royalties, dates booked per year, radio spins.) Success is realized on a personal, philosophical and spiritual level. If I am using my talents to create good art that asks good questions and seeks to find answers, then I have achieved what I have set out to do.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a faith-based, eclectic pop singer/songwriter. Right now I’m most excited about my upcoming project “Pariah” that will be released digitally as singles throughout 2021. Pariah is a concept album where every song is inspired by a different biblical person at a time in their life when they were an outcast. But these stories are told in modern musical and lyrical settings, so people today can relate to the emotional experiences in an up close and personal way. The challenges that I most specifically face in deal with connecting to an audience when you have an unconventional musical style. My brand of mood pop music is not very mainstream in the faith-based listening community, so connecting with my audience can be a tricky, up-hill battle. But I’d like people to know that if they are looking for inspiring music that is deep, original and unlike anything they’re hearing on the radio, then I’m your artist!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in the Valley Ranch/Las Colinas area of Irving and I would take my friends out to check out the new restaurants at The Sound, or some local favorites like Muai Fresh, LA Burger, or New York Pizza Pasta. We have lots of variety from independently owned restaurants in Irving!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This Shoutout is dedicated to Chad Carouthers who has produced two of my projects (including my upcoming project releasing in 2021). He is a fabulous and creative producer, a joy to work with, and someone who truly took time and care to understand my music and help me achieve the sound I wanted to realize. The artist/producer relationship is so important in creating quality, compelling recordings. I am so thankful to be able to create music with someone as talented and genuine as Chad.
