We had the good fortune of connecting with Angelica Zalavarria and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angelica, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
It was a Risk to do photography full-time, especially when I had no other option in 2020. With God in front of me, I had to put myself out more often, and now I can say I’m booked every weekend and doing sessions in between.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Every photographer’s unique style is how you make your client feel. I don’t treat them like another number. To me, they become family. You have to have that connection and bond between each other to do magic. One phrase I remember from Rick is, “is not their Quinceañera/wedding is Ours” I am proud of how far I’ve come. It hasn’t been easy being a single mom of 4 and taking care of my mom, but I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help of my boys and my little girl, that helps me with my mom when I have to shoot a session or event. It’s hard because you are wearing several hats. Owning a small business takes a lot, but it feels damn good when you deliver a gallery and mom, Quinceañeras, or brides love their images! It makes everything so worth it! Every day you learn something new my biggest challenge is to balance time. You have to make time to rest and have family time.
I want everyone to know that no matter the circumstances, you can make your dreams come true. And especially for single mothers out there, it is possible. It’s not easy, but if you love what you do, it’s worth it to make all the sacrifices to get where you want to be.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Definitely will start with a good hike favorite spot Arbor Hills. Then off to breakfast/ brunch with some mimosas in uptown favorite spot is San Martin Bakery and Restaurant. Do a little tour of down town like klyde park or maybe hang out by grapevine lake.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First of all, God for giving me the strength to keep going. My family, friends, and my clients for always supporting me. And one of my mentors in the beginning was Greg Daniels. Then Lorena burns For always supporting Me, her friendship and always there when I need help. Rick Davila for Available when I have questions or any doubts. I admire this 3 photographers 100%
