We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra Goodman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexandra, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
There have been a few times since Covid that I’ve considered giving up my small business. When I start thinking about this, I remind myself that I love creating things with my hands. This also gives me a much needed balance from sitting at a computer for 40+ hours a week.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a Graphic Designer by day but my true passion is creating things with my hands. I started working with resin a few years ago and absolutely fell in love! I’m always excited to experiment and try new things. My boyfriend recently gifted me a Cricut and I cannot wait to incorporate this with the resin and expand my inventory!
Putting yourself out there is always feels like a risk. When I first got started, I was so scared to apply to be a vendor at markets. What if I didn’t get accepted?! Well, I didn’t always… and at first it was embarrassing and felt like rejection. When I did get accepted, I would get so anxious about it. The idea of unloading all my stuff, setting up a booth/table, and having to talk to people made me so nervous! I’m generally a pretty shy person, so this was very much out of my comfort zone. Take a friend! My sister went with me to all of my events at first. Just having her there with me made me so much more comfortable. Eventually, things started to get less scary! It wasn’t nearly as difficult to talk to people about my own work as I was expecting it to be.
What do I want the world to know about me? I never shy away from a challenge. If someone has an idea they want to bring to life, even if it’s new to me, let’s figure it out together. There’s nothing I find more rewarding than problem-solving!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite spots to go for dinner and drinks is Smoky Rose on Garland Road. The atmosphere is upbeat and fun – and the menu has a great variety. Taco Diner in Lake Highlands is my favorite Friday night patio spot, when the weather is nice.
When we want to order in dinner at home… Mumtaz Indian Restaurant is a weekly staple in my household! I also love trying new Chinese food restaurants… even though my main dish is ALWAYS Beef & Broccoli.
If it’s warm and sunny, I want to be outside. White Rock Lake is a great spot to go for a walk, see lots of dogs, and people watch!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m so lucky and grateful for my family. They always support my creative aspirations and help push me out of my comfort zone when I need it.
