We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Kozub and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Me & my business partner Hung came up with the idea of Vital Apparel to help spread awareness around mental health and the positive benefits fitness and living a healthy active lifestyle has on ones mental health.

The idea came about because Hung had unknowingly struggled with depression and anxiety for a chunk of his life and he started exercising, eating healthier, and living an all around more active lifestyle to help cope with them.

When we saw the benefits from living that way we thought it would be a good idea to start an activewear brand to help promote mental health and fitness. Along with that we wanted to donate part of the profits towards mental health research to better understand mental health illnesses and look out for the future generations.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I think what sets us apart from others is how we treat our customers and go about our customer service, We strive to create an amazing customer experience. Every package we send has a card with mental health statistics and hotline numbers and we add a hand written thank you note in every single order. Our goal is to treat every customer (new or repeat) like they’re our first customer.

Starting our business was extremely difficult, and it is still difficult to this day haha. We started our business when we were both 23 years old and dumped basically every penny to our name into it. We took advantage of every opportunity we had with going to expos and pop up shop events to build brand awareness and network.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would bring the to Terry Blacks BBQ as the first place to eat. Then I would bring them to the Dalllas world aquarium. Do some exploring in Deep Ellum and just eat at a lot of good restaurants!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
That’s really tough! There’s so many people and books who’ve helped us get where we’re at. The main two people I’d like to shout out is our girlfriends. (Hung’s girl friend Tina) (My girlfriend Natalie). They are both unbelievably amazing women who supported us from day 1 and constantly help us with events, designs, creating content, you name it. They have been through the thick and thin of building Vital and we wouldn’t be where we’re at without them.
