We had the good fortune of connecting with Jesus Segovia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jesus, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think risk taking is crucial to success. For some people it comes easier and they get the opportunities without the risk, but most of us have to go through some struggles. It also tastes a lot better once you reach a certain goal knowing whatever you had to do to get there paid off. It was all worth it. My parents took risks during my childhood to ensure a better life for my brothers and I. Moving to a different country where they didn’t even speak the language. Now were all here doing well and living a life they helped shape for us. So I definitely feel like my risk taking comes from them.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my podcast Not In LA in May of this year shortly after the pandemic started. I started it out of frustration that some creative plans that I had with some friends had been postponed or cancelled due to the situation the world was facing. So i decided it was the perfect time to start something that would be 100% my own. I didn’t really have any expectations and had no real plan to follow. I just knew I had to start it and whatever happened with it would happen. In just 5 episodes the podcast has already taken form and one that I’m really proud of. The podcast has turned into an interview based show where I have a new guest in every episode. So far my 3 guests have been touring musicians but I already have guests booked weeks in advance that range from comedians to working actors on Netflix shows. One night I thought I would just DM some people I would love to interview thinking I would never hear back from them but realizing I had nothing to lose. By the next day most of these people had replied with excitement about wanting to be a part of it and accepting my interview request. This was extremely unexpected. Since then I haven’t stopped talking to potential guests, emailing managers/agents, and fitting them into a newly very tight schedule. I’m beyond grateful for everyone that has accepted to be a guest so far and still can’t believe it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I was born and raised in Mexico so every now and then some of my middle school/high school friends from there will come visit me. I moved from Denton to Fort Worth in 2018 and couldn’t be more in love with this city. I love taking my friends to Magnolia. There are so many choices there and new ones being added all the time. Salsa Limon has amazing Mexican food and great margaritas. The little shops next to Salsa Limon are great too like Centre and Panther City Vinyl. I also love the neighborhood where I live in which is the South Main District. There I have many options as well like The Bearded Lady, Coco Shrimp, and my favorite, Game Theory. Game Theory is awesome because not only do they have great food and drinks but they also have a ton of fun board games you can play while you’re there. It’s a perfect place to go with a group of friends. Also in this neighborhood theres a little shop called Morgan Mercantile that has the coolest Fort Worth themed clothes and many other things. My friends from out of town love coming here to get a shirt or some sort of souvenir from their visit.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely my wife and daughter are my main source of inspiration. They are my world and everything that I do is to make them proud. But also I wouldn’t be who I am without the amazing guidance of my mom and dad. I couldn’t have asked for better role models in work ethics and family life. Lastly, I would like to shoutout all the super talented artists that have granted me interviews for my podcast and gave me hours of their time to have some great conversations.
