We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Bates and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to create generational wealth for my daughter, I wanted to create something within my immediate family that we could all benefit from. Hence, the name of my business 213 Sparrow St Solutions; specializing in all services. It’s named after the street that I grew up on.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been a self-proclaimed nerd, always eager to learn how things work and gaining clarity on existing theories. So, my aspirations in my career came from just wanting more out of an ordinary 9-5 job. I wanted to make a difference in the work that I performed which led me to seeking out additional projects, taking data science courses, learning complex procedures that were out of my comfort zone while forcing myself to adapt to change. It wasn’t easy, at times I felt like an Imposter like maybe I wasn’t as intelligent as I thought or that someone would see through my mask. I overcame those fears by speaking positivity into my daily tasks and reminding myself that it’s ok to fall as long as you get up. Which is what led me to hosting my very first community health fair on 04/09/2022 for the Hamilton Park community. Currently, I’m gearing up for my second enrichment fair for back to school in August 2022. I just want people to know that my story is not finished, it’s only just beginning.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A nice lounge or speakeasy.
Local places with live music such as Sandaga or Vinettis.
Local Indian restaurant called Indian Place off of Ross (aka Shiva).
Any park or hiking trails (I love the outdoors) such as the Dallas Arboretum, Dallas Aquarium.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this to my mom and daughter, my biggest inspirations. My mom is strong willed, tenacious, intelligent and I love that I embody some of her traits. Being that I’m a mother, I want my daughter to see similar traits in myself as she sees in her grandmother. Also, I’d like to recognize my cousin, Sharron. She has been instrumental in me pushing me and going after the things she has accomplished. This will probably be a surprise to her :). Lastly, my partner, he is supportive, motivated, and allows me to just be me.
