We had the good fortune of connecting with Ms. PD Poetic Designs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ms. PD, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My business Poetic Designs started over 20 years as hobby. I found I had a knack for creating unique gifts that family and friends wanted me to create for the special occasions. As years passed my passion to create grew stronger so after working my job of 16 years I decided it was time to make the jump and give it my full attention.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Consistency is what sets me apart. My creativity started from a place of heartbreaking loss at a young age. I channeled my energy into writing poetry. From there I began creating poetry gift baskets for family and they were well received. It grew into a deeper passion to create all kind of beautiful, unique things over the years. I’d get an idea of what I wanted to create, research then practice, practice, practice! Creativity just seems to flow effortlessly and that’s where I believe it comes from God because I don’t have to force it, it’s natural.
Some of the challenges I face with my business is marketing handmade, one-of-a-kind items. I find people tend to flow towards mass produced items or trends. I feel like today’s society doesn’t fully appreciate handcrafted items and the time, labor and sweat that goes into each creation.
I created Poetic Designs for the individuals who appreciates handcrafted and one-of-a-kind beauty. Everything from my brand is made by my hands. Jewelry, Home Decor & Gifts. I even create custom orders and baked goods for special events, very well rounded in what I offer.
It used to disappoint me that people couldn’t see or appreciate the brand I work so hard to build, but I now understand that it’s ok and it no longer bothers me. I just push forward with my passion and let things fall where they may. My brand will attract who its supposed to.
What I’d like the world to know is, Poetic Designs is a labor of love and passion. My heart is in every piece I design. It’s my calling, it drives me every single day. I want customers to look at my work and feel the energy put into it, and to feel good about owning something that not everyone has because it’s one-of-a-kind, like they are!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh wow, that’s a tough one! I have always been a home body lol! Usually the best times are at my home. Friends and family love to gather there because I am a hostess who goes above and beyond to make sure my guests are happy and entertained!
Sorry for such a boring answer!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest shoutout goes to GOD! God, through life experiences and favor, has given me the gift of creating beautiful works. For that I am forever grateful! I also thank my father (R.I.P), mother, brother and children for always encouraging my talents. A very special mother figure, Trish (R.I.P), who encouraged me and pushed my creativity on a daily basis, believing in me and even financing my business in small ways to help me grow. Last but certainly not least, my AMAZING husband Kenneth who believes in me so much he gave me his blessing to leave my job and pursue my business full time. He is also the backbone of Poetic Designs and works just as hard to make my business look good!
