We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Tamayo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It was terrifying and thrilling at the same time. My thought process was being able to be completely dependent and able to govern myself and develop my own personal brand for my craft. I wanted to branch out and experience what I could do on my own. What I could create for myself and my clients instead of depending on someone else to create the setting and style.
I had enough clientele and I figured I may as well see what I can do. Here I am 4 years later and still standing, even through the Pandemic. It’s been an interesting ride.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am passionate about my craft! Being a hairdresser is one of the best jobs because you impact people lives in the most positive way. Spending time with a client and creating a look just for them is so personal and rewarding. Getting to where I am today was not an easy feat I had to climb my way up the ladder and work long hours and study hard. Being persistent and always looking toward my goals is how I dealt with the challenges I faced. Being a left handed stylist, I had to work even harder to learn because the industry is 90% right handed. When I watch someone cut hair it looks backwards to me. When I was an apprentice I found a way to solve my problem, I would look over my shoulder in a mirror at the instructor while they were cutting and it would look like they were cutting left handed!

All it takes is a little creative energy to overcome obstacles. I want the world to know anyone can create their life to be what they want, if you have a desire make it happen! Focus on your goals and work hard, take everything that comes your way as a lesson and be positive. Life is what you make it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take my friend out to Grapevine Lake and hang out on the beach area for a day. I’d love to spend a day at Fort Worth Nature Center and hike and picnic. We’d go out to Near South Side Fort Worth and grab some drinks at one of the bars, The Bearded Lady or maybe Liberty Bar. It would be mandatory to get some grub at Salsa Limon! We’d take a stroll around Downtown Fort Worth and check out the old buildings perhaps check out a Jazz band at Scat Lounge. Take a bike ride around Trinity river on the many trails. Finally, I think a day checking out the Modern Art Museum and the Kimball Art Museum would be fun and then take in a movie at the Omni Theater. Fort Worth has so many awesome places to visit and things to do I love living here!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Anthony Reale is my mentor and the one person who really pushed me and made me the stylist I am. I still have habits from my old apprentice days and remember lessons he taught me throughout the years. I probably would have quit doing hair if it wasn’t for him, so I am very grateful to him for supporting and encouraging me when I was a Jr. Stylist.
