We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Ryan and Jen Wade and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, Jen, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
So many wonderful changes and growth have occurred since last speaking with you! In the last year, my family has grown by 2. We welcomed our twins last summer and after 6 months off call I am slowly getting back into the swing of things.

I have also been blessed with a new colleague, Jen. Our partnership grew during a perfect season and has proven to be effortless. We both have little’s at home and have learned to use our partnership as an advantage to find the work/life balance that we need in order to be present for our families and still rock our small businesses.

What should our readers know about your business?
Dfw Birth Resource started with a small partnership of 2 doulas which grew to 4 in 2017. What sets us apart is the initiative we take as a group in making sure we learn from each others experiences and the training we complete for us all to be equipped with the same tools to serve our clients. All of our doula’s are professionally trained in providing evidence based care, childbirth education, placenta encapsulation, and belly binding. Jen and I (Sarah) work together to serve Ft Worth. Jen is a Certified Bradley Method Instructor with 7 years experience and hosts her classes in the N.Forth Worth area. I am a Certified Birth Boot Camp Instructor and serve in the Waxahachie area. My main focus is on helping a woman prepare mentally and physically for the challenges that pregnancy, birth, and postpartum brings. I am a certified yoga instructor and also provide private prenatal/postnatal yoga.

Collectively, our partnership is the biggest tool we bring to the table. With a combined 12 years of experience, an extensive network of reputable resources, and a shared love of all things birth we aim for the stars when serving a family! I think I can speak for both of us when I say the biggest challenge we have been faced with is creating a healthy balance between family life and being on-call. Finding a healthy balance is essential to being successful, especially in this field. Recently, we have been working on forming a shared schedule to help us do just that and plan to release it this Summer 2020. I have learned that being a business owner is knowing when to adapt in order to improve level of care. We are excited for what our future holds!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many wonderful spots in DFW! We would make sure to spend at least one of those days in Ft worth, beginning with breakfast at Snooze then head to Marion Sansom Park for a hike. Favorite lunch spot would be HG Supply while enjoying their patio view of the river. If we were in a rush for a quick bite we would head to Pak-a-Pocket instead for their delicious gyro’s. Our evening would end on Sunset square with Del Frisco’s Grille and Pete’s Piano Bar. Being that Sarah is an Ellis County native, Waxahachie would have to be on the list of places to visit. Depending on the time of the year we would add Poston Garden, Scarborough Faire, Crossroads of Texas Film & Music Festival, or even their historic tours to our list! We’d do some shopping downtown, take some pictures in front of the Historic Courthouse, and stop at Cork House Winery to share an appetizer and enjoy a glass of wine.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutouts include Susan Taylor with DFW Midwife collective, Dr. Heaven Londot with Heavenly Spines, and Josh Harper with Buffalo Creek CrossFit. These 3 have been essential to supporting me throughout my years of experience of being a doula. My colleagues at DFW Birth Resource, I wouldn’t be able to provide the level of care I do without their feedback and intuition, and my husband, the one who gives his full support to my love of serving
