We had the good fortune of connecting with Colby Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Colby, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
My kids, my wife, seeing where the company has started and how far it has come, the people I keep close to me, and my team that has stuck with me through thick and thin; their loyalty is something that I can’t explain. The sacrifices I chose to make not only affected me, they affected my family and my team, and they stuck by me and continue to do so. It makes me incredibly happy knowing they believe in me.

I also find it fulfilling to offer something that brings a sense of happiness and quality to a space. I believe that what we provide and make for clients, whether it’s residential or commercial, is something that people are proud to own or proud to be around. In the commercial hospitality industry, most of our products fill rooms that when you walk in as a guest, just make you feel good. I like playing a part in that experience.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
SouthLoft is an American-made furniture manufacturer and fabricator specializing in solid wood furniture as well as a complete metal fabrication shop. What sets us apart from our competitors is our quality in how we fabricate items, as well as our coatings system that we use, and our pursuit of manufacturing innovation and efficiency. I’ve been fabricating and building things with my hands since I was a kid, so it’s incredible to see how we’ve evolved from a hobby that started in a garage to a nationally recognized studio. We specialize in everything from one-of-a-kind dining tables to large-scale furniture packages that combine artisan craftsmanship, a collaborative design process, and a client-first approach.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t get out much these days, but when we do, we always wind up at Katy Trail Ice House in Dallas. For good barbecue we venture over to Zavala’s barbecue in Grand Prairie. The restaurant and patio scene in Dallas is pretty vast, so there is all kinds of stuff to do and places to go on that front. The Shops at Legacy in Plano is always a good time for walking around, shopping, and eating.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All of the people who stuck with me on this journey – my family, my team, our clients – and everyone who picked up the phone when I rang.
