We had the good fortune of connecting with Sushia Lancaster and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sushia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking is needed to me in a life where you are wanting growth and change from whatever point you are at.
It should all begin within oneself, to then ease the other outward actions onward.
Believing in myself has been the most beneficial and crucial self risk taking I could and have allowed myself. Believing that indeed, I am enough, important, worthy, capable, and my own main character continues to mold me towards the comfortable and authentic reality of myself.
In regards to my music and performing, I’ve done a complete 180. As a child I was so petrified, that I would not want anyone to look at me sing. Now I jump into the crowds with my guitar solos and look for any chance to perform.
Allow yourself the risk of believing in yourself and you’ll thank yourself.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Three things that set me apart are my vocals, energy, and guitar loops.
Thus far, I’m most proud of coming out of my shell (musically and personally) and being included in VoyageDallas. I am excited about the unknown continued adventures and growth with my music. I expect to gig/tour outside of Texas and overseas!
The biggest thing that’s helped me advance in my music career is believing in myself, and then networking. Ha. Consistency in practice is just a given as well.
So far I’ve learned that you have to be kind towards yourself. I persistently went type A towards my performances and I came to realize that could not work. Mistakes will happen; you just have to continue onward and learn from them.
I want people to know that I am self taught on the guitar and how wildly I have transformed in my confidence too. I always thought I would stay stagnant, but I did not. I want this to inspire others in their journeys. Put the work in, lead with your passion, humbleness, and continue to root for yourself. Never forget how far you’ve come.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Scat Jazz Lounge – the music /vibes and alluring alleyway speaks for itself.
Game Theory Restaurant + Bar – One could spend hours here.
Avoca Coffee Roasters – Chai Lattes are fire.
Velvet Taco – everything is amazing here.
Modern / Kimbell Art Museum – speaks for itself.
Marion Sansom Park – Awesome varying park.
West 7th / Magnolia / Southside – tons of shops and breweries / bars to check out.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Organization RVC (Rising Voices Community – open mic) has been an amazing group where I was allowed the space to craft my gifts, watch, learn, and connect with other artists as well.
The space exudes acceptance, support, and welcome. Trang, Ladi, Manuel, Chaz and (newly) Jacob continue to grow this community amazingly.
Outside of this group, definitely my parents and everyone else that has continued to support me. I don’t show the appreciation the best but know it is there.
