We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnathan Ketelhut and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnathan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My wife was my biggest inspiration for starting my own business. I was actually working for a television company at the time, as well as shooting weddings on the side. I got to a point where my side business took up a lot of my downtime. As scared as I was about leaving my stable salary job, my wife convinced me that we’d adapt and be able to put 100% of our focus and energy into our own business. Once taking the leap, she couldn’t have been more right. I was able to spend all of my time and efforts growing and marketing our business. There is nothing more freeing than creating your own hours and being your own boss.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I couldn’t be more proud of how much our business has grown over the past 8 years. I started this little adventure in 2015, where I started shooting 2-3 weddings on the side, and it has very quickly grown into a powerhouse. In 2022 we opened up a new studio, shot over 60 weddings, shot and edited a national television show, and filled every available hour after that doing work for local businesses and much more. There have been bumps and bruises along the way. Finances were something of a learning curve. Having to budget and figure out the best way to grow while managing cash flow was a full time job. I had to manage/oversee edits for our wedding work, produce a tv show, schedule travel, shoot the show, edit the show, and manage clients. All of these while having to keep on top of finances. Delegation was vital, and it was not easy. I think my biggest lesson from last year was to slow down, and learn how to say no. I don’t need to say yes to every potential client.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting Mystic, CT I would 100% bring him to the local breweries. I guess I couldn’t pass up touring the Mystic seaport and aquarium. Mystic is a very historical area so there’s no shortage in places to go and see.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife deserves all the credit and recognition. She’s the one who pushes me to step outside my comfort zone.
