We had the good fortune of connecting with Juan Labra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Juan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I studied graphic design, and once I graduated college I was working in the western wear fashion industry where I got to learn a lot of new things about printing and textiles. I was also always creating logos and branded packages for friends and other small businesses so I thought it would be cool if I actually took care of the logo, digital assets, and merchandise for clients.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like to think I’ve been naturally artistic since I was little. I was always the drawing kid and grew up having my art in school galleries and contests. Once it came to my senior year in high school I found out about graphic design and decided to pursue it as a career and haven’t looked back since. When it comes to working on design projects, each one is unique which makes it exciting and fun. It doesn’t feel like I’m actually working, I think that’s what’s taken me so far.
As a designer, the biggest challenge is finding a unique style that stands out from the rest, but also being versatile enough to know how different design elements are created as well as interpreting a client’s needs and ideas into something amazing. This has helped me with the company since we can tailor to different clients’ tastes when it comes to their brand and merch.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Probably to the stockyards and downtown Dallas, my favorite food spots and bars here in DFW which there are a lot of. I think eating out every day would take up most of our time for sure.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family for sure, without their initial and continuous support I don’t think NewGen would be where it is today.
