To start, I disagree that advice should be conventional. The best advice should reflect the needs of the recipient not the vanity or lack of creativity of the advice-giver. Useful advice is customized, not sanitized. For example, children are expected to follow the rules of ‘conventional wisdom’ (the supposed foundation of advice), but then – unsurprisingly – they’re ill-equipped to imaginatively solve problems or easily embrace innovation as they mature. Then, as adults, we’re expected to abide by the convention of ‘following the leader’, but most folks never learn what constitutes good leadership. As a result, not enough people know how to recognize a leader nor how to become one themselves. Read more>>
