We had the good fortune of connecting with Zakiya Evans and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zakiya, why did you pursue a creative career?
Long story short… because God told me to. I felt a calling on my life to help others for a long time, but did not know what that looked like. And like the saying goes “If it’s your calling, it will keep calling you” and that is exactly what happened to me. I always felt drawn to service and grew up as a creative, but at some point I thought that that was not the career I should take and planned to go a different route. But after much prayer and fasting, God continuously brought me back to this path. I love it because not only do I get to help other people all day, but I also get to express myself through my brand and business and get to return to my creative side on a daily basis.
What should our readers know about your business?
As the owner of Best Life Inside Out LLC, I help women lose mental and physical weight by healing their relationship with God, food, and exercise. I offer a 6-Week Transformation Program that gives my clients the space to learn what works best for them in their health and fitness journey so that they can improve their overall health and self-image as they prepare to take the world by storm.
My brand started off as a campaign for Miss Senior at Tuskegee University in 2019. During this time, I was starting my own healthy lifestyle journey. I’ve battled with emotional eating and binge eating most of my life, and this led to me being overweight even though I was always active. While in college, I was able to successfully lose 40 lbs. by healing my relationship with food and exercise. My journey wasn’t easy and is still an ongoing process with trial and error, and I don’t want to see anyone repeat my past mistakes they could’ve been avoided. Once I became a certified nutrition coach (INHC) and certified personal trainer (NASM-CPT), I began learning so much about nutrition and fitness that I was not taught growing up. And I remember thinking that I have to share this with my community. I can’t be the only one to hold in all this knowledge and important information. And I decided to create a business out of it to spread the message to everyone around me and create a ripple effect.
My business helps teach the community about what it truly means to live a healthy lifestyle. It’s more than just eating right and working out, but it’s also about learning why it is important. In my business, I help my community connect the dots on how everything is connected and affects our overall health and well-being. Our mental, physical, and spiritual health are all intertwined and should be taken seriously because it affects how we show up in other areas of our lives as well. At the end of the day, we cannot go out and change the world if we’re not even taking care of ourselves first. We can’t pour from an empty cup.
Starting my business was far from easy, and the lessons I learned were not only to keep going, but also being ready to pivot plans when necessary. I believe that being open to growing with my clients and community and actually listening to their needs and struggles to provide the best solution possible contributes to the success of myself and my brand.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting, I would take them to all my favorite places. If it was a week long visit, then we would try all the amazing Black owned restaurants in the area first. Then, we would go to a Journeyfit workout class on the weekend, maybe visit Six Flags, the Farmers Market, and attend a concert for our favorite artist.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God, my Butterfly Crew, my Tuskegee family, my mom, line sisters, friends, family, and dog children Meek and Minnie.
