Meet Trent D. Walters | Christian Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Trent D. Walters and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trent D., what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always been a imaginative, creative person. I used to write short stories when I was a kid. I loved playing with action figures and creating stories of their various adventures around our living room. So a creative career was the only type that I would be fulfilled in. I have worked in advertising for the last 27 years which is very creative. We creatively help brands connect to the right audiences so that their businesses grow. My writing career allows me to use my creativity to build stories that not only entertain but help people maximize life. I hope that my creativity helps inspire people to want more out of life and their relationships and see that it’s definitely possible.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a self-published, purpose fiction author. I write entertaining stories intended to teach important life lessons—books with purpose.
I am most proud of my debut novel, “Exactly How It’s `Posed to Be.” It’s the story of three young men who attend a fictional HBCU called Winton College. One of these guys is fighting to put an end to his hidden virginity, while another proudly wears his own as a badge of honor. And the third dude is determined to hook up with as many “lil’ shawties” as possible, which just might get him killed! The choices these three guys make lead to powerful consequences that will impact them for the rest of their lives.
It’s an unorthodox story that encourages young men (and women) to wait until marriage for sex. The journey of these three young men shows what could happen when certain decisions are made. Readers will draw their own conclusion about the right path to take based on the outcome of the characters’ lives. The book doesn’t have to preach. It just tells a great story.
I’m proud that the book is available in all formats. If you like having a physical book in your hands, paperback and hard cover copies are available. And the audiobook is perfect for busy folks who don’t have time to sit with a book but love to listen while they are driving, working, cooking, etc.
Writing this book was not easy. It took me FOUR years of trial and error to get it right. I wrote a lot as a kid, but got away from it after college. When I turned back to writing after working in the corporate world for over twenty years, writing fiction was tough! I had to learn to “show” and not “tell” through my writing. Four years and drafts later, the book launched!
I was able to keep going because I truly love writing. I believe this story was given to me by God to bring to the world. It encourages young people to avoid the pitfalls of promiscuity and wait until marriage for sex as He instructs us. In today’s culture it’s an important message so I wanted to make sure I finished.
There were many days I was discouraged, thinking my writing was no good, or no one would be interested in this story. But I learned when those thoughts rise up to just keep going and never give up. Even if it doesn’t look like you’re going to be able to do it, keep going.
I’m now doing the same thing as I work to promote the book and get it into readers’ hands. It’s taking time (more than I’d like if I’m honest) for people to discover it, but I don’t intend give up until it is well known. (Notice I said “it”–the book– is well known. I’m less concerned about me being well known as long as the book and it’s message are known far and wide.)

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d have them come in late September or early October and we’d start by visiting the Texas State Fair. It’s a great place to experience a lot of Texas culture with great food and interesting exhibits. Corney dogs and fried-some-of-everything are a must when visiting the fair, not to mention a picture with Big Tex.
I’d take them to Northpark Mall for some shopping. I happen to like shopping so places like Northpark and the Galleria get me excited. We’d want to see the JFK memorial for some history as well as the African American Museum while we were in Fair Park.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My beautiful wife Sandra. In addition to being my support system she also wrote her book first and self-published it. She navigated all the first-time publishing pitfalls and paved the way for me to get my novel published.
