We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Mondick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taylor, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
One of life’s most challenging tests is undoubtedly the test of time, particularly how we utilize the time we are given. I have come to understand that each season of life demands a different version of ourselves. The way we prioritize the ever-changing demands of our careers directly impacts our overall well-being.

During the initial years of my business, I became a social recluse, dedicating all my time and energy to ensuring our success. At that moment, it was what the situation required. Starting a company in a highly competitive market necessitated being the best and offering something unique. Such dedication is crucial, but it can also lead to burnout, causing the initial passion that drove me to become self-employed to wane, as it did for me.

To continue providing the best experience for my customers, I realized I needed to be at my personal best. This meant building and nurturing a high-quality team that would allow me to live a more balanced life. Finding balance is often a lesson learned through experience. Now, I set boundaries, such as refraining from texts or phone calls after a specific time. I also trust my staff to perform their duties with excellence.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am engaged in a fascinating line of work as a small business owner running a competitive cheerleading facility. In addition to our competitive programs, we provide recreational tumbling classes suitable for individuals of all ages and skill levels. While we primarily work with children, establishing a solid and trusting relationship with their parents is essential for our success.

Competitive sports inherently involve intense emotions, as athletes strive to be the best, and parents may have high expectations for their children. Sometimes, these aspirations can clash with the coaches’ methods for achieving success. Consequently, we face unique challenges that demand effective communication. It cannot be stressed enough that open and honest communication is critical, even if it entails delivering information that one party may not want to hear. Maintaining transparency with our customers prevents future headaches and fosters better understanding.

I have personally experienced the apprehension of having conversations with parents, particularly those who held differing views. While I could boast about my numerous accomplishments in the industry, many believe that “a parent knows best” in the end. However, having confidence in my ability to deliver and relying on my expertise and knowledge have allowed me to navigate such issues successfully. I repeatedly remind myself, “You know what you’re doing; you know what you’re talking about.” I then use the foundation of why people initially chose our facility as a basis for effective communication with our customers.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I reside in Fort Worth, a city that holds the distinction of being the fastest-growing in the United States. I am deeply fond of my city, as it offers something to suit the preferences of every individual. When it comes to exploring on a bicycle, I have my own unique approach. While traversing the Trinity Trails, I delight in making stops at the various restaurants and bars situated along the river. Establishments such as HG Supply, Quince, Woodshed, and Press Cafe offer enticing options for a well-deserved break.

An unforgettable experience in Fort Worth involves spending a night at the renowned Stockyards. Here, one can savor drinks at the Drover, enjoy live music at Second Rodeo, and conclude the evening at Basement Bar, a beloved local watering hole. For a dose of cultural enrichment, we can immerse ourselves in the latest exhibits showcased at one of our world-renowned museums. And if the opportunity presents itself, catching a rooftop movie at The Worthington would be the perfect way to complete the day, adding a touch of cinematic magic to our urban adventures.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe much of my success to the invaluable support of Tammy and Ted “Buster” Hood. They recognized my potential early on and believed it was worth investing in. When I initially started my company, I had to utilize space from an existing facility during their after-hours, which was far from ideal for my customers, even though there were only a few at that time. As our business expanded, the need for dedicated space became evident.

In a remarkable display of generosity, Buster and Tammy went above and beyond by putting their own well-being at stake to secure the necessary funds for me. Their efforts enabled us to purchase our own equipment and significantly accelerate the growth of my company. They believed in my dream and wholeheartedly ensured the means to make it a reality. I am forever indebted to them and will always carry a profound sense of gratitude towards them.
