We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney Danielle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sydney, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My passion is to help others. Years ago my partner suffered from depression and negative thoughts. In my effort to help on her journey towards mental clarity, I studied the benefits of holistic healing, and aromatherapy. Since I had already been making candles as a hobby I figured I could combine the two passions together and create candles that heal and promote peace and mental stability.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from other candle makers is my passion and the quality of my work. Not to mention I’ve been making candles for 20 years. Every move that I make, every decision about my brand is well thought out. Sometimes months in advance. I started Sydney’s Scents in 2015. One of my biggest hurdles I had to overcome was in 2017 I had to stop making candles due to breaking my arm in a car accident making it impossible to pour wax. I wasn’t promoting or even making candles and I wasn’t happy. Then in January of 2019 I found out I had a brain tumor and had to undergo emergency surgery. I was unable to talk, unable to walk… I had to relearn everything. That was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through in my life. Immediately after, I spiraled into a anxiety driven depression. The only thing that saved my mental was going to the gym every day. I worked out 5x a week from March of 2019 until March 2020 and lost 30 pounds. I was happy. I was balanced. During this “time away” from my online candle boutique I researched how I could improve my brand and come back with a second launch that would blow everyone away. And on March 20, 2020 I did just that. I launched the second season of Sydney’s Scents.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Right now one of my favorite spots in the city would have to be Jaxon Beer Garden in downtown Dallas. The atmosphere, the food, the drinks… all spot on!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely need to shout out my tribe. They motivate me to be the best version of myself and push me to go harder. Being an entrepreneur is FAR from easy. I am only human and sometimes (a lot) I tend to get overwhelmed. I am super appreciative of my friends who have became family for their words of encouragement and ability to speak life into me when I am at my lowest. I couldn’t do any of this without my family and friends. I am so thankful for each and every one of them and I couldn’t ask for a better support group.
