We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Gaubert / Erika Portales and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie / Erika, how do you think about risk?
We think risk takers are for the fearless, optimistic, and those with a clear vision of their dreams. Risk takers will endure the failures that come with it because they are aware that is part of the journey of success and they will not let failure stop them from making their dreams reality.

Erika: Taking risks has been a big part of my life. Ever since I can remember, I always went for what I wanted without thinking or caring about the “what ifs”. I tell myself, “If I don’t at least try my best, I don’t want it bad enough”. You can call me an optimistic dreamer. I always think on the bright side and have faith that God will have my back. I wouldn’t be the wife and mother I am today without taking some risks along the way. Thankful for my husband and my family that have always supported my risk-taking experiences! I’m blessed and extremely grateful for them.

Stephanie: Risk has played a major role in my career path. My family has been a great influence on how they took risks. It is exciting to take risks and see the results. I wouldn’t be where I am in my life and career if I didn’t go for it. I’ve found that the more you sit back and wait, the likelihood of meeting your goals decreases. Even while taking risks, my faith remains in God. I know that God has always guided me even when I couldn’t fully understand His will for my life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We are a Latina-owned women-operated hair salon and are just in the beginning stages of it. The knowledge coming out of cosmetology school is limited, so it was crucial to learn in the real world. Erika had a chair and worked out of her apartment for a while. Stephanie did house calls and kitchen hair at her best friend’s house. Ultimately, we were determined to keep learning and become better stylists every day. Tedious, long hours and late-night hair transformations were very common. We are proud of all the hard work that’s been poured into every client. We couldn’t be more proud of Beautiful People salon and the stylists who have chosen to believe in us as they grow their brand. One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is to never give up even when things seem difficult at the moment. We both have been in situations where we questioned doing hair. But even through those rough times, we pushed through and gave it our all and because of that, Beautiful People salon was born.
We’d want the world to know that when you come to visit us at our salon, you’ll have the best experience. Our number one priority is the health of our clients’ hair. We’ll do whatever it takes to ensure our client’s hair integrity is cared for and thought of. We strive to always be that bubbly, airy, and relaxed environment when it calls for a self-care day.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Stephanie: I’m a Dallas girl, and I’m a huge foodie so we’ll be eating all day. Obviously, you can’t go wrong with brunch so many good spots it’s hard to choose, either Sixty vines, Breadwinners, or Gloria’s. After brunch take a stroll in Bishop Arts and do some shopping plus it supports small businesses which I love. Then head over to Katy trail ice house to grab a drink and chill maybe even walk Katy trail. Once nighttime hits it’s time for dinner, if we’re feeling fancy we’re going to Drake’s, but if we’re feeling a little more casual Las Palmas or Mayer’s Garden.

Erika: I’m a Fort Worth type of gal! If you’re new to the area, I have some must-have places for you. For breakfast I’d definitely hit up Brewed off Magnolia. You can’t go wrong with their Southside Benny or the Chicken and Waffles! Plus they got a good variety of coffee and drinks.
Then we gotta hit up either the Botanic Gardens, Modern Art Museum or downtown Fort Worth to Sundance Square to walk off them calories.
For lunch, I gotta say back to Magnolia street. Gus’s fried chicken is the best fried chicken out here okayyy. But if I’m in the mood for some good seafood, Pappadeaux is the bomb . com ! Although, Coco Shrimp also has my heart too. They have the most simple menu and literally everything is good! Man I’m getting hungry just typing this out haha.

If you enjoy yourself a nice cold beer, I gotta take you to a brewery. Rawr and Sons is one of my favorites. I love that for only 15$ you get to keep a cool glass cup (every time is a different design) and mingle with friends. I also like to go to Martin House or even Wild Acre!

Gotta finish the day with a movie at my favorite AMC movie theater in Clear Fork. They have the most comfortable seats and best surround sound! Since we are in the area we’d go to Malai Kitchen, Doc B’s Restaurant and Bar, Mesero or Fixe Southern House for dinner. You can’t go wrong with either of these restaurants.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We are always grateful for those who have been a part of the journey. Our family has been the biggest supporters from the start, and we wouldn’t be where we are without them. We’d love to shout out our families, and our amazing husbands who have been with us through the ups and downs. Our family supported us when we started the process of opening Beautiful People salon. Our clients deserve a big shoutout, especially our loyal clients! If not for them trusting and choosing us with their hair we wouldn’t be the stylists that we are today. We received love and support from our close friends and couldn’t be more thankful. We’d like to give another shoutout to our mentor Cynthia, owner of Blush Salon in Dallas. Cynthia graciously shares her knowledge and experience as a salon owner. Shout out to the stylists who choose Beautiful People to be their home salon. They took a chance and believed in our dream and it’s been an honor to see our girls grow their business and become amazing stylists. We are very blessed to have everyone in our lives who keep believing in us and showing their support.
