We had the good fortune of connecting with Sky Strickland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sky, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands and having the ability to create something from scratch. Dentistry is awesome because you’re an artist and you’re goal and mission is to design someone’s smile that is pleasing to the patient in an aesthetic way. The ability to create something is what drove me towards dentistry. It requires you to think outside of the box and to get creative. To see someone’s smile and to know in your mind the slight adjustments that can be made to improve their look while also keeping their natural beauty.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Dentistry isn’t always easy and there’s a lot of challenging factors that come with it. Getting into dental school and starting off learning the career is difficult but it is 1000% worth it. There’s always something to learn- every patient and case is unique and it is a continually learning career. Only thought I have only started, I have already experienced how rewarding the field truly is. I will never forget making this lady two new crowns when she came to see me crying about her front teeth being black. When she got her new white teeth and sat up and hugged me I knew this was the right career for me. To be blessed to have a career that positively impacts someone’s life every day is so rewarding and I will never take it for granted.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Dallas is amazing and has so many cool spots that are must sees. It’s essential to see a Dallas Cowboys game while here- I haven’t had the opportunity to go while in school but the atmosphere and field is one of a kind. There are so many good restaurants that I don’t even know where to start- If you are feeling nice- The Henry has been my recent favorite after a long week of clinic- If you want something more low key La Ventana has great tacos and margs.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe all of my success to the dedicated mentors in my life. Dentistry is so amazing because so many people in the career want to pour into the younger generation and give back knowledge to further the career. Two people I automatically think of that have significantly impacted me is my father and Dr. Andi Miro. My father instilled hard work in me from a young age- encouraging me to play football all the way through high school and stick to a workout routine that started in the morning and then practice at night. He taught me what the sport of bodybuilding was all about- and the work ethic and dedication the sport requires. When I first heard Dr. Miro lecture in Dallas I was blown away by her level of passion and skill. I had never heard someone teach like that and knew right away that’s the level of passion and skill I dream of achieving. It meant the world to me to be able to spend a week learning at her course and being able to intern and see the level of dentistry I one day hope to achieve. I would be nothing if it wasn’t for the incredible people in my life who motivate me to be better and achieve absolute greatness.
