We had the good fortune of connecting with Simone Artis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Simone, why did you pursue a creative career?
I always had a creative mind growing up. I loved to read, write, act, play instruments, basically I loved anything that I was able use my mind creatively. My thoughts always seem to not want to focus on one thing at once; I was always thinking about different ways I can do or create something. I had to put all those thoughts into something to make it come alive, and one way I do that is by designing clothes. Not until I was older that I decided to pursue fashion design and moving toward making my own brand.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am mainly a fashion designer (although I have plans on expanding that). I make everyday streetwear clothes, for the person who doesn’t want to be ordinary. I’ve made clothes that you wouldn’t see on the street everyday. My goal is to make people be different by my clothes they wear. Where I am today was not easy, but that’s a part of life. I mainly overcame challenges by just pushing through even when you don’t feel like and doing the best I can at the time given. The lessons I’ve learned is that you have to believe in yourself even when you don’t feel like it or when nobody else does. You have to stay positive with your thoughts, be patient, and work hard. I want people to know that making a brand takes work. My story is basically just beginning but I know what I currently want to build will leave a footprint in this lifetime.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow this is a hard one! There’s so many places I like to visit, but mainly food places because I love to eat. Well, of course we have to start with brunch, which there’s so many spots, but my new favorite the comes to mind is Whistle and Britches. Next, I would probably go to downtown and just walk around some spots like Klyde Warren Park, DMA, go to a few different bars in Uptown. Then of course I would go to Deep Ellum just to see the different art pieces and murals. By the time, I’m sure I’ll be tired.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Well of course I would be anywhere without all the blessings God has given me. But the person I would love to recognize is my mom. She basically raised me and my brother by herself and she has been through and overcame so much. I know she is very proud of me and I’m really proud of her. She’s shown me despite anything that happens in your life, you can fight through it and win at the end.
