We had the good fortune of connecting with Shatorial Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shatorial, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Whew, this is the very thing that drives or kills the vibe of being a small business owner with a full time career. Since starting my business I have been on what I would call a mid-life rollercoaster; why you might ask, because I have never been great at identifying what “thing” is more important than another.. I WANT TO DO ALL THE THINGS! I’m driven by the things I do well- and stumped by the things that take a little more processing time. However I’m constantly reminding myself that I can’t be that way when STARTING a business, especially working in the education field daily. Balance can happen, it takes consistency and reflection!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an educator by day and what seems to float into night some days, so that alone speaks! Being an educator of tiny minds weighs heavy, as you want to be able to pour into them lifelong habits and characteristic traits that will shape them for the world, to have a better RIGHT NOW & TOMORROW! Having that within my background, that craft side seeps in during that class decoration time! I feel both my career and small business tie together and make a perfect bow- it’s just the timing doesn’t always align. It’s challenging more so than not, simply because I want to be able to give my 100% to both aspects of ME! What I have though, taken from the pauses is gearing up the things I know I want to pursue when that pause time is up, specifically toward my small business. I have learned that not all things come RIGHT away so take the small steps as a way to make sure all things are done with greatness!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ha! I’m chuckling because I’m more of a homebody than anything, but I love to have a great time! So if this was so the first things we’d have to do would be go to the spa & get mani’s w/pedi’s! After that we’d go to a nice rooftop bar/lounge and site see- of course have some good food and DOPE beverages, grown folks kind :)! I would then love to step into a nice mall where you might find stores such as SHIEN, Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, Champs, etc. Of course once that time has been spent I like to get a nap in and relax a bit- then get dolled up and step out. Now stepping out might be another nice rooftop or a nice bar/lounge, perfect enough to enjoy myself and not feel suffocated. Overall anything fun and relaxing!
