We had the good fortune of connecting with Roporscha Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roporscha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting a business is always a risk, but I decided to look at this venture as an opportunity to do something that I enjoyed and make other people feel good in the process. I’m a “church girl” that loves makeup not only for its physical transformative properties but also for the emotional. I initially wore makeup to hide a blemish caused by a domestic violence situation but I realized after a little while that I felt good inside too. SAVD Shades was birthed from the premise that, “you can also look good from the outside in.”

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Although I work with defendants everyday, I am consistently reminded that our life is made up of a series of decisions and no matter how good or bad they are, they shape your life and affect those closest to you. I have always been an advocate for people who have been marginalized in some way so I naturally gravitated to law and the justice system. After my collegiate matriculation I was able to work in the private sector for the government. I learned so much from both my superiors as well as my more seasoned co-workers. I later began working in insurance and that is where my customer service skills were put into play. Being able to appeal to people on any level is something that I have been able to use as a catalyst to help and to elevate. This is the main idea behind my brand, SAVD Shades. I have recently launched the apparel extension of SAVD Shades called BOHOSHE. BOHOSHE came from me defending a friend who was given a “back-handed” compliment. She was told that she was beautiful for a big girl. I was offended just hearing it and questioned, “why can’t she just be beautiful on her own?” That statement alone is what I want to empower women of all shapes, sizes, and colors with and that is why BOHOSHE was born. She’s Beautiful On Her Own. We offer quality, on-trend pieces that cater to the ladies with extra curves. We are all uniquely made and we should embrace our differences. I feel that this is only the beginning for me. I have only tapped into a small percentage of my potential. I’ve recently become a certified Texas Notary so stay tuned for more because it’s definitely going to get greater later!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Dallas has definitely changed and grown immensely since I’ve been away. Now that I am back home, I have been able to visit some amazing eateries, events and places. I would definitely take my friend to the Black Girl Magic Museum, We would make reservations for brunch at True Kitchen & Kocktails. One day we would have to have lunch at Al Biernat’s and visit the Dallas Arboretum. Of course shopping at North Park or the Galleria would be necessary. We would have a slice of some amazing cake from The Cake Bar and you can’t come to Texas without some truly authentic Texas BBQ from Odom’s. We’d stroll the Historic Westend and Segway Through the Arts District, We’d head to the outlets for some bargains on our favorite designers and have a night cap at the Omni Hotel downtown.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people that I can say that have been instrumental in the great parts of both my life and business. However, there are two people that have hands down been amazing mentors and support; my mother, Raye Thomas and my cousin/sister LaPia Wilson, owner of Girly O Boutique. They have been on the phone with me walking me through updating inventory lists at 1 o’clock in the morning and sometimes caring for my son while I attend vendor pop up shops or weekend tradeshows. They are key people in my “village.” I sincerely appreciate all that they do.
