We had the good fortune of connecting with Reagan Quinn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Reagan, is there something you believe many others might not?
One piece of advice that I disagree with is that making a living in the music industry is unlikely. Generally, that type of advice is given by people who—however well meaning—have no experience in the music industry at all! In fact, there are hundreds of different jobs, and different levels of success within music, just as in any other industry. Becoming a full time musician with a good living IS hard work, but no harder than starting your own business. No harder than spending years honing any other craft or working in any other field. And like any other career path, after a few years of hard work and dedication success is very likely.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I grew up in the heart of Texas as the daughter of a songwriter and found my voice early in life. I began writing songs at age six and continued to write hundreds throughout my childhood and teenage years. However, I didn’t pursue performing as a career until my mid-twenties.
During that time, I worked as a nanny and teacher and began to see a correlation between music and healthy development. For me, songwriting has always been a form of therapy. I decided to pursue my bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in Psychology, Addiction Recovery, and Family Studies.
I also developed a Music & Movement program based in music therapy, which I teach in Austin and surrounding cities.
After a few years of working in that field, I began performing locally. Performing turned to recording and a full-time career as a songwriter and musician. I now perform all across the state and have recorded and released two EPs.
In 2020, as the pandemic shut down the live music industry, I again turned back to my roots as a songwriter. I released two new singles and began work on my first full-length album. This time I adopted full creative control in the studio and chose musicians and producers I trusted.
Emerging from the Covid crisis, I was stunned to see us become more booked than ever before. In 2021, we played more than 100 shows and hope to continue that pattern in 2022.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite days was spent in the Dallas Arts District. We caught the trolley to a local bistro for breakfast then continued on to the Dallas Museum of Art where we explored exhibits from all over the world. After that, we ate lunch at a vibrant new restaurant in West Village before sitting down at a nearby park. That evening we watched the sunset from the rooftop of the Canvas Hotel, which overlooked the entire city.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my family—who have believed in me and supported me throughout this journey.
