We had the good fortune of connecting with Myah Mayhew and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Myah, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work-life balance has always been a difficult concept for me to grasp. I am incredibly driven, and oftentimes stress myself trying to live up to my own unrealistic standards. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that mental health is sacred, and prioritizing yourself is not always selfish. I now try to be intentional about making time for things like meditation and spiritual life, family and friends.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have extremely diverse musical influences, which sets my artistry apart from others. My dad raised me on rock and roll and blues, which means I knew many songs by artists like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Journey, and Heart at a very young age. I also grew up doing theatre, so I was no stranger to show tunes. These genres combined with country and folk influences as a result of growing up in the south have made my music and songwriting unique from others.

Today I am blessed to be working on my debut EP with Jupiter Records and to be performing several times a month, in addition to being a full time Music Business Major. None of these things would be possible without my parents who have believed in me since day one and raised me to have the confidence and work ethic needed to pursue a career in the arts. While being a full time musician has its challenges, I know that I am blessed beyond measure to have the privilege to pursue a career in the arts.

While I am just starting to build a brand and fast- track my career, I hope people feel a sense of honesty and authenticity through my writing. I want my music to build a safe space for people to talk about issues that they might otherwise be hesitant to discuss.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have lived in DFW my whole life, and I absolutely love it. There is a common misconception that all there is to do in DFW is eat and drink, but I disagree (also what is wrong with eating and drinking?). If my best friend were visiting the area, I would take her on a little tour of all my favorite places near my hometown, Rowlett. First we would go thrifting at my favorite thrift store, Life Message. Then we would swing by Intrinsic Smokehouse and Brewery for lunch in Downtown Garland. After lunch we would explore the square and stop by my favorite vintage store, The Frocksy, followed by a trip to the best speakeasy coffeehouse, Cafe Frida. Jimmy Wallace Guitars and Momentum tattoos will also be on the itinerary, of course. Later we would be sure to swing by Good Records, and spend the evening listening to the vinyl we bought. Pretty good day if you ask me (which you did).

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this Shoutout to my community and high school theatre director, Mrs. Sheppard. At age 11, Mrs. Sheppard saw potential in me that I had trouble seeing in myself, and for 8 years she continued to push me to be not only better at my craft, but also a better person. Because of her direction and support, I have the tools and confidence to pursue a music career today. Mrs. Sheppard remains a trustworthy mentor who I know will be there for me whenever I need her, and I will never take her instruction for granted.
