We had the good fortune of connecting with Mollie Hancock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mollie, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Actually I heard of another business in Canada doing the same thing…(Frog Box) .they did not have any interest in coming to Texas….so we started our own business. Thought of the name, had the logo designed and purchased the materials and started our business in August of 2015. I will say we have learned many things over the years and I think made improvements based on those learning curves. The reason this kind of business appealed to me and my family is that is enhances my other profession. I have been a real estate agent for over twenty years and so many people lament over the cardboard box and so do I. Since I was a little girl I have been concerned about Mother Earth and the impact humans have on her! Elephant Trunk Moving Supplies is so simple…and genius at the same time. I say it is the triple warm and fuzzy…..First..the client feels as thought they have made a good financial decision..(to rent the box is about the same as buying cardboard….the savings is the cost of the tape and the time to assemble the box and pick up the box. We deliver right to their door at a specific date and time…(so civilized) and pick it up from their new place, again at a specific date and time). Who does not feel good about that. Second….using our materials keeps things out of the land fill and third…it makes packing and moving so much easier. A bonus…movers say the boxes dolly up quickly and save time on the move and therefore save more money….. I do hope we get to have a real conversation so you can flush out the details. One of the biggest challenges for our company is to explain our business because there are so few other companies doing what we do and many people are confused, thinking we are movers. Thank you!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Well, there are so few others…this is not a factual number, .but I have heard there are only about 50+ other companies in the nation doing what we do! There is one local franchise called Bungo Box. We would love for you to do a story of us side by side! We are head and shoulder above Bungo Box, and we are not too proud to tell you that! Haha! https://bungobox.com/locations here is their link. Lessons: When we stared, we had a pick up truck. Not good. We learned that the boxes and their lids would take flight and sail out of the bed of the trunk…not good. WE have a really good van that is wrapped with our logo and other images, it is the best rolling billboard. Big lesson. We are a family, our daughter claims to be the Elephant Trunk Moving Supplies Heiress. Most often she does the blogs and the FB and Instagram but most recently both myself and my husband got COVID and she had to take over the business for over 14 days and she worked hard. We do what we need to do….and that keeps us growing! If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I do love my city! Plano and Dallas and beyond! Sites would include the Hagerman Nation Wildlife Refuge in Sherman. The Snow Geese are currently in residence and that is a beautiful site to see! If they were looking for a hotel with a view… The Virgin Hotel is wonderful! Book a room with a view of downtown and the sites around the grounds are interesting as well as the pool deck and the restaurants are wonderful. The staff is so personal and if you are a Texas resident there is a special rate. I always include a visit to the arboretum. I have been a member for over ten years and it never disappoints. We would certainly go on a week day…the weekend is just too crowed. Lunch in the DeGolyer House is the best. Breakfast at XO in downtown Plano would be on the list. The breakfast tacos are so yummy as well as the matcha tea. I like it with vanilla syrup! Dinner, I am a huge fan of Whistle Britches…the Frankford & Preston location. The food is so yummy and the craft cocktails go down so easy! If we had time, I would get tickets to a show at the Kessler in Oak Cliff. That is the best music venue and the vibe in Oak Cliff is really great! I think that would be a great cross section of our fine city!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our little company is not yet…that huge success story…however…we started from zero and last year we grew…2,722% since day one…that is pretty awesome in my book. We work hard, provide outstanding customer service and always say thank you!!! I always say….as a business owner…I am the CEO and the janitor…any messes I make, I have to clean them up! Haha! We are willing to work hard and try to make the best decision at the time based on the information we have. I will say there have been times…that we learned as we go along and as we get more information. We do not think we know it all and try to keep an open mind to new ideas. I am not sure where I got this philosophy, however, I believe that it is important to plant seeds everywhere you go as a business owner…sometimes the seeds grow, sometimes they do not, sometimes they grow into amazing things and other times they grow into awful things….but keep planting seeds! That philosophy has been helpful to me as a realtor and also as the owner of Elephant Trunk Moving Supplies.
