Meet Michelle Watson | Internet radio station owner and radio show co-host

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Watson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, what is the most important factor behind your success?
When The Surge DFW radio station was started back in 2017, the idea was to play all kinds of music without being told what to play. On commercial radio, there are guidelines as to what music you can play and how often you can play it. And of course the genres of music have to be played on those stations that cater to that genre. We wanted to play all the new music along with the great music from back in the day.

To us, a song doesn’t have an expiration date on it.

Last year in 2020 after Covid changed our lives, I had an idea that involved featuring local talent and getting their music played on our station.

But then I came up with an even better idea and started reaching out to other artists world wide.

Helping others and putting them in the spotlight was the main reason why we started and have continued to do this.

It’s been a great success and we plan to keep going. There’s too much talent out there and everyone deserves their time to shine.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would hardly call us artists. My husband, the dj, he has the talent in my eyes, I just get to talk to people and get to know them.

He has a way of playing music and making people happy. He’s done it for years and he hasn’t lost his touch even with all the new technology the world has to offer. He honestly is my favorite dj.

What sets us apart from others in the radio industry is that we don’t ask for anything in return.

We aren’t doing this for monetary gain.

We just love to help people.

Seeing our featured music artists playing in venues or hearing their music played on our station makes us proud. Of course the bigger they get, the prouder we become.

Of course like any other goals that one may have, it’s not always easy to accomplish those goals and they won’t always be welcomed by others.

We have stayed true to what we do and we have stayed loyal to each other and ourselves and that’s what I feel will help us continue to grow as a brand.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A week long trip, we need one ourselves. Lol. But this is a great question because we actually do have guests coming into town soon.

So, we would start the day off with breakfast somewhere.

Who doesn’t love breakfast?

But it’s important to support local or those ma & pa cafe’s so if we could find a place where they make home-cooked breakfasts we would go there. The Snooty Pig has amazing food.

Lunch is easy, burger joints are the best and Rodeo Goat has been a great place to go. They’re milkshakes are the bomb.

Now for dinner, Kris loves steaks so we would have to take our guests to a brazilian steakhouse somewhere for sure.

Six Flags is always a fun place to visit so we would take our guests there. I’m a huge roller coaster fan.

Deep Ellum definitely has a lot of hot spots so we would go there for some drinks and dancing, and as long as the place plays good music, we will be there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, my best friend and partner, DJ Kool Kris. We have been together for a long time and our goals are the same.

We couldn’t do this without each other.
