We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Hoang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
People used to call me naive when I said I’d find a job that I loved. And to a certain extent, I probably am. Everyone has different passions, different skills and use-cases. Never been one to compromise my own happiness for the sake of a job.

What began as a hobby sprung as a business. Advice to my younger generation: be unshakeable in your pursuit, and you’ll always be successful. What defines success is always up to you. As I recognized my own talent, along with others commending me, I redirected my passion into my business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Mish Mash Photography & Videography specializes in portrait & event coverage. I now have 9 years of experience in the industry. The business was formerly known as Michelle Ashley Photography. I personally believe the brand shift was a pivotal transition for the business. The business was no longer mainly friends & family booking through me. It was when I began to be recognized by other businesses, strangers and competitors. A small win for me– I finally got around to hiring a part-time assistant. I’m so thrilled to have enough business to need more hours than a day can give me.

The brand is moody, romantic, and inviting. While anyone can pick up a camera and smile Mish Mash PV captures outspoken beauty in people.

The camera isn’t a full-time gig. Outside of this, I work as the Director of Marketing for Katydid.com. More interested in me? Good thing I have a website for that, too. www.meeshslife.com

But in the end, work isn’t life for me. It’s the people for me. It’s the moments for me. Oh, and it’s the Cheetos for me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In the past few years, I’ve devoted time and shared knowledge with my partner in crime: Cody Applegarth. He has jumped into my love for photography with me. Basically threw him into the fire! Cody pushes me to be better, advises me to learn more, and guides me to attract the masses. Without him, my work would not have a second set of eyes, another level towards perfection, or a standard of detail that I never knew beforehand. He is a part of my story now, and serves as my second shooter as well. We continue to grow the business together, especially as we take another step into a new market, Kansas City.
