We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Malowanczyk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe risk is always something to consider. I personally enjoy a bit of risk with everything I do. Pushing the boundaries creatively while having confidence and conviction in the idea you are getting behind is worth the gamble. Anything innovative that might change someones view for the better is worth it, and personally if we aren’t striving for that its not worth considering. Besides creative risk taking, making the jump from a stable well paying job to something new in a new city multiple times has been the best moved ive made. Granted its been hard to make the initial adjustment, and gain the trust with new colleagues, it has paid off incredibly. Its taken a few years in my latest position at Apple/Beats by Dre to really get the runway and creative freedom I wanted, but its been worth the time, effort and risk. I now feel like I’m making the best work of my career.

I must say, Im pretty risk tolerant these days due to bring early in crypto…extreme volatility, massive waves of gains and losses etc. That being said, it’s about managing where I feel comfortable taking these risks. 9 times out of 10 I say go for it!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Most of my creative work comes from challenges. Problems to solve that a client has or finding the best way to communicate new features or benefits of a product, service etc. Finding innovate, artful ways to solve these problems is what I love. I feel my work stands out by being able to do this without directly clinging on to trends or patterns in design and the creative industry and being confident in that. Powerful graphic design, powerful image making that feels contemporary but can stand the test of time is the ultimate goal. It’s taken a very long time to learn the different tools, conceptual thinking methods that help develop this work. Being able to have a singular vision, that can be expressed all types of touch points and come to life through film, photography, graphic design, art is a skill I’m still trying to perfect and probably will for the rest of my life. Next step is making more art for myself –painting, music, sculpture…

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to my good friend Matt Goodman, editor at D magazine. Always positive, encouraging the people around him and giving Dallas its deserved shine.
