We had the good fortune of connecting with Melvin Bulock Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melvin, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
Here’s a powerful and authentic response:
“The most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make was walking away from a six-figure job, stepping into the unknown without a safety net. It was terrifying not knowing what lay ahead, but I trusted my vision and knew deep down that playing it safe wasn’t my path. That leap of faith has led to challenges, growth, and opportunities I never imagined possible. Sometimes the toughest decisions are the ones that truly set you free.”
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
“My art is all about capturing moments that tell a story, whether it’s through photography, videography, or our interactive photo booth experiences at A-List Photography. What sets us apart is our ability to not only document events but to elevate them, creating a tailored experience that leaves people with lasting memories. I’m most proud of the way we’ve been able to blend creativity and professionalism, bringing a personal touch to every project we take on.
The journey to get here wasn’t easy. Walking away from a stable, six-figure job to pursue my passion full-time was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made. There were countless obstacles—financial risks, self-doubt, and the fear of the unknown—but I overcame them by staying committed to my vision. My support system, including my wife Destiny Bulock and mentors like Jiles King and Rick Young, played a huge role in helping me push through tough times.
The lessons I’ve learned? Trust the process, stay true to your passion, and always be willing to adapt. Failure is just part of the path to success. I want the world to know that A-List Photography isn’t just a service; it’s a story-telling experience. Our brand is built on authenticity, creativity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. We don’t just capture moments—we create experiences that people remember for a lifetime.”
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
“If my best friend was visiting the DFW area, we’d definitely have an epic week! We’d kick things off with a day party at The Common Table, where the vibe is always on point, and it’s a perfect intro to Dallas. From there, we’d hit up Deep Ellum for some live music, street art, and good energy – you can’t go wrong with the nightlife there. For food, tacos at Fuel City are a must for that late-night craving!
Midweek, we’d head out to Plano for some outdoor fun at the World Spring Park – it’s the perfect place to relax and maybe even catch a game of relay or frisbee. And of course, we’d explore more hidden gems like the Bishop Arts District, with its cool boutiques, art galleries, and incredible food spots.
Throughout the week, we’d mix in a bit of everything – great food, exciting nightlife, and chill outdoor spots. Whether it’s grabbing brunch, catching a local show, or just taking in the city’s energy, DFW has something for everyone. I’d make sure they left feeling like they’ve experienced the best of what the area has to offer!”
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My journey wouldn’t be what it is without the incredible support system I’ve had along the way. First, I have to shout out my wife, Destiny Bulock, whose love and belief in me has been a constant source of strength. My mentor, Jiles King, and Rick Young have both played pivotal roles in my growth, offering guidance and wisdom when I needed it most. The book 48 Laws of Power has also been a game-changer, shaping how I approach both life and business. Lastly, to the community that has supported A-List Photography – you all deserve recognition for being a part of this journey!”
