We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Corrieri and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“When you come to the edge of all the light you have, and must take a step into the darkness of the unknown, believe that one of two things will happen. Either there will be something solid for you to stand on – or you will be taught how to fly.” -Patrick Overton
I first read this quote when I was about 14 years old. I read it on a postcard, which, as a mater of fact, I still have today, sitting close to my office desk.
I felt a true connection to it right from the start. I have had a history of struggling with faith-faith in myself, others, and life in general. The meaning it holds for me and the impact it has, has gotten me through some of the most difficult times.
As a teen I used this quote as a hopeful wish. That this quote could be as a beacon of faith, an ideology I wanted so badly to believe in-an underlying desire and wish to have faith in myself, and my life’s journey.
As the years passed, I continued to struggle at times with fears, insecurities, and worries that somehow I would fail. I found comfort in this quote. Re-reading it until I could hopefully convince myself of its truth.
The farther I got into my counseling courses and own personal life experiences, the more comfortable and confident I became in myself. I still had days of doubt, but I pushed myself to have faith in my abilities and own self worth.
Then one day it happened…I no longer had to convince myself the message was true. The quote is true and that no matter what the world puts in front of me, I can handle it and be okay. This includes the good, the bad, the confusing, and devastating parts of life.
Having faith in ourselves is the single most important tool. I have witnessed some of the most courageous and determined people who are working with their own mental health. These individuals do not give up even when it seems easier to do so. The darkness is intimidating and having faith in ourselves is a helpful tool for evolving and changing. I remind clients all the time, change is hard and that is why people struggle to do so. Having faith in the process toward change can make all the difference.
At NorthStar Counseling and Therapy, I tend to use a lot of different affirmations, because I never know which one will be a beacon of faith for someone else.
