We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Atkinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria, we’d love to hear about a book that’s had an impact on you.
Les Brown, Live your dreams. I have always been a big fan of motivational speakers from Les Brown, Zig Zigler to Tony Robbins and so many others. Live your Dreams taught me to be a planner and organize my thoughts, It was a self help book to prepare me for what i wanted to accomplish and do it in a manner that would not discourage me and not allow my goals to overwhelm me. After reading this book i became more willing to push forward without fear and always keep a positive thought process. Life can/has come crashing down on me and i always choose the high road -This too shall pass is a motto that i have lived by for a very long time and it has helped make it thru the roughest of times. One of the lines in the books that stood out to me before i even purchased the book was-” We may not always be able to control what is put in our path, but we can always control what we are…and what we will become.” Les Brown. I chose Success!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a home basked bakery, specializing in custom Cakes and cookies. My attention to detail has been a big success factor, I’m human & i have my days where i know i can be better and i learn something different each week as a cake leaves my home on how/what to improve to make sure the next is that much better. Getting to where i am today was not at all what i expected, it was a lot of trial and error & gaining the trust of strangers was not easy but i worked hard every day to promote myself and my business and begin gaining paying clientele. I had to offer a lot of free stuff to be able to make this work. After a while i learned that good things take time and i had to keep at it. I want people to know that you can start with nothing and still accomplish the unimaginable. Hard work and consistency is key to making anything successful. When i started this business it was out of need and a desire to have more than what i was settling for i knew that being behind a desk was not something i wanted to do forever, i found my knack and ran with it. Lady M’s Cupcakery is a success because i didn’t give up and i wanted to work hard at something that was mine and i alone could make or break it. Here i am almost 9 years later still striving to be better at my craft and bringing more to my clients.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many amazing people I would love to thank. First and foremost my Best Friend and Fiancé, he let me live this dream no questions asked. I was able to quit my job and start this with nothing, he was there ready to help me when and where he could, for that i will always be grateful for. He is still my biggest support system. Second, My Baby Sister for always pushing and encouraging me on those late nights where i cant even keep my eyes open she is my best kept secret to making it on my crazy cake weekends. to Ceara Mapes for gifting me my first mixer when i first started, she said “here have at it” and thats what i did! (Its getting framed when i open my shop) Lastly, to all the amazing women who have supported me in all of this. There are too many to name that I don’t want to miss anyone and upset them ! Lol. Whether it be a simple phone call, coming over to help, sharing my work and encouraging others to support my business and supply runs they have been there, you ladies are all my rocks and i am so grateful for all of you.
