We had the good fortune of connecting with Madeleane Hazen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Madeleane, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote is “People do not buy goods & services, they buy relations, stories, & magic.” This quote reminds me how to run my business and serve my clients. I don’t want clients to book with me just because they need the service I can provide, but more so because of the experience and relationship they will be gaining when working with me. The most rewarding projects I’ve completed in the entirety of my business have been those where the client & I connected on a deep level and when they didn’t see me as simply a service provider. We as humans aren’t just looking for a product, I think we are looking for relationship and service. If ever I’m feeling a bit stale in business, I remember this quote and it relights the passion I have for working with people.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a completely self taught graphic designer, meaning I did not get trained professionally in design with a college degree. This has at times made me feel less credible, but I’ve spent years teaching myself and being resourceful because this craft is one I’m super passionate about, but just found a bit later in life. I believe that the approachability of my designs, whether that be branding or websites, is what sets me apart from others. It’s extremely important to me that my websites are user friendly for my clients so that they can walk away from working with me with a tool to use rather than something that stresses them out. Because of this, my designs can err on the simpler side in order for them to manage the upkeep, but I believe that simple is beautiful and functional. I still love to listen to my clients and find what it is about them that makes their work unique so I can fuse their personality in delicate ways to the design. I’m proud that my clients often say they feel their website and branding is so “me” by the end of it. The lessons I’ve learned along the way are that comparison truly is the thief of joy. It’s impossible to compare yourself to those in your industry and continue to be successful. While I do my best to support fellow designers and champion their careers as well, I’ve had to put my blinders on and move forward without any care to what they are doing in their business.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being self-employed and working from home I can honestly say I don’t get out much! But if I were to, my ideal day in Dallas would probably look like: Breakfast at Breadwinners Shopping near the design district Visiting the multiple little coffee shops around town – each one is so unique with its own character (I personally love Toasted, LaLaLand & Houndstooth. Dinner at Reunion Tower – this is simply a cool experience! Drinks at a bar like Paradiso – their bar area feels like something out of Europe

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There have been many that have played a role in my journey as an entrepreneur, whether that be small or large. My dad instilled characteristics in me my entire childhood that shaped me into being someone who was destined to be a business owner, I just didn’t know it at that time. For that, I’m eternally grateful. More directly, there is one person in my industry who helped catapult my success when I needed a helping hand – Catherine of Treadaway Co. is a branding and website designer who offered her time when I was first starting out and gave me helpful knowledge that literally changed my entire client process. Her simple recommendations on what CRM to use or her favorite resources gave me tools to actually build a business. I remember being so touched that she spent an hour of her time to call up someone she didn’t know to chat, just off of a simple question I sent her on Instagram.
