We had the good fortune of connecting with Macy Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Macy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I’ve always thought the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. That has stood true for me thus far. From opening in a small town and being told I shouldn’t. To growing big enough within four years to purchase my own building downtown in a bigger city. Then to expand not only my current spa business but to later add another Airbnb business above the commercial space I ran my Spa and Salon out of. Since purchasing and running my two successful business, I have been able to purchase more property to hopefully soon, open a second Airbnb. Not only is that a huge reward in my eyes, my property value has more than doubled since purchasing it only a few years ago. Making it a great investment for my future!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me and my business apart from others is that I really set out to make my place more intimate than others. For example, instead of having multiple stylist in one room, I have one hairstylist, one nail technician, one massage therapist, and myself doing aesthetics, and we all have our own rooms. That seems to make our clients more relaxed to either take a few minutes to themselves and breathe for a moment without the normal shuffles of a noisy, crowded salon. Or they feel as if they can talk to their technician if they just need some girl talk and someone to listen.
I would say I am proud of how quickly I grew my business. From opening in a small town to within four years, buying my own property in a bigger city downtown to run my spa business out of and expanding with bringing in a hairstylist, massage therapist and nail technician. I also opened an Airbnb in the loft above the salon and spa. I am now getting into the medical part of esthetics and offering microneedling with radio frequency, as a start. I was also honored with the “It’s a Vibe” award with Vagaro and was able to accept the award in San Francisco, California.
A couple of lessons I’ve learned are: when someone tells you no, you are asking the wrong person. Also, don’t worry about anyone else’s business and focus on your own, you will be much more successful that way.
I would want the world to know that it’s not easy to do what I do. Owning a small business, let alone multiple, is one of the scariest, hardest, most stressful things you can do. However, if you are determined enough anyone can do it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would definitely be staying in my Airbnb, The Bird House. It is a loft in downtown Gainesville about 10 minutes from Winstar World Casino! Walking distance to my favorite shops such as Infinity Raine, Bungalow 123, and Amelia’s Attic Antique Store. Definitely stop by Sweet Jayne’s for coffee and breakfast. My favorite is the spicy pig biscuit! Then, Goodies on Commerce for my go to quick lunch. For dinner, I love Sarah’s on the Square. It’s perfect for a date night or dinner with a friend. If you’re in town with the whole family, Saint Joe’s Pizza is the way to go! Delicious! The County Seat Kitchen & Cocktails is where I’d end the night. They have live music, a cold beer or your favorite mixed drink! Leonard Park and Frank Buck Zoo are a must as well, if you have kids with you. It’s a great place for the kids to run & play! During the summer the community pool is open too. Complete with water slides! Every year in early May, Gainesville hosts the Medal of Honor parade. A very neat experience for all ages. There will soon be a Medal of Honor museum opening as well! This is just to name a few. There is so much happening in our small town. Come check it out!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents definitely deserve credit. They helped put me through school and let me live rent free along the way! They not only come when it’s something small like helping prep for an event but they are there for the bigger favors, even when it could have risked everything they had. They had to of believed in me so much to do that. I’m so incredibly grateful for the constant support I received from my family and close friends. Without them and my loyal clients I wouldn’t be where I am today, so Thank YOU!
