We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Nix and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
There really wasn’t a clear thought process behind starting the business…it really happened organically. I had just had my first son and thought I would stay at home with him. One of our friends asked for some advice on a house he had recently bought and since he was a close friend, I could bring my son with me to the job site. I found myself thinking about the project and pouring over old design magazines for inspiration. It brought me a lot of joy being able to have my creative outlet in addition to being a mom and I never stopped.

What should our readers know about your business?
The process of building the business has been hard, but in hindsight a lot of fun and tremendously rewarding. Initially it was just me doing the design work and invoicing, yet we now have a team of 5 that includes myself doing the design work, 3 project managers who handle all the ordering/ project details and a business manager who handles al the finances. The biggest lessons learned are not to order anything without signed proposals, a contract and money up front. We want to continue to design quality elevated projects and I would love to have a product of some sort in the near future.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We have a lot of friends come see us in Austin and our favorite thing to do is wake surf on Lake Austin and hit Ski Shores or Pool Burger followed by Deep Eddy Cabaret afterwards. It’s low key and a perfect Austin night.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who influenced me to build my business, hone my craft and just keep on going.

My mom was a commercial interior designer and growing up around her running a business was very inspiring and influential as she balanced work and family life. My time working at Vogue and Neiman Marcus really taught me to focus on quality vs quantity, to always see the world with an edited eye and elevated my taste and style. My dad has always been my #1 Cheerleader and believed in me. My step dad pushes me to take chances and lean in to difficult challenges. We are constantly talking through difficult situations and his advice is paramount. My previous boss J. Randall Powers remains a mentor and an inspiration – his style is so chic and he does a beautiful job mixing old and new elements. My husband and three sons who don’t make a big deal of me traveling for out of town projects.
