We had the good fortune of connecting with Kellie Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kellie, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Mental health is such an important part of life and has been seen as this non-existent thing. Although it is getting better, we still have a ways to go before mental health is truly seen as important as physical health. This is particularly true for children. As a Registered Play Therapist™, working with children at their developmental level using their language of play ensures that they are fully being seen and heard. The therapeutic relationship is the foundation of the healing process. Teaching these skills to parents is just as crucial as seeing the child in therapy. With healed children and families, comes healing for our communities and a brighter future.

What should our readers know about your business?
I wanted to get into private practice as a play therapist to provide a more variety of services, lower cost services, and the ability to use insurance for services. We are close to University of North Texas where many play therapists get trained, but there are not many play therapists in our area who accept insurance or offer lower cost services. I am so excited that my business gets to offer that while still providing quality mental health services. There were challenges with setting up with insurance panels and it can be challenging to maintain lower cost services, but it’s worth it. I’ve learned that if you really want something, it can and will happen and that patience and consistency is key. I want the world to know that play therapy is the best form of therapy for a child and it should be accessible to every child who needs it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you are visiting little D (Denton, Texas), there is so much to see and do…and eat! I would recommend going to the square in downtown Denton and visiting the shops there. My favorites are Recycled Books and More Fun Comics and Games. For fun, you can play 80s arcade games at Free Play and then go eat and have a drink at LSA Burger. For dessert, there is Beth Marie’s for ice cream or 2 Gentlemen from Verona for the best gelato ever made. Denton is an eclectic place, is very accepting of all people, and there is so much fun packed into our town. There is a festival for every holiday and always some community event happening on the weekends.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many to be thankful for in supporting me – Cari Purdy for teaching me all the play therapy things and being a wonderful supervisor, Natalia Palmer for being a great cheerleader and encouraging me, Christy Graham for helping me boost my confidence as a business owner, and Lydia and Quinton Neighbors for being there consistently and being so inspirational.
