We had the good fortune of connecting with Keishia Lewis-Crabtree and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keishia, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I am “unruly” in many areas of my life. What sticks out to me the most is the illusion we can’t be our authentic selves to open doors we work so hard to knock down. I love that I created my own table to which I get to choose the seats that will sit around it. I am a “go against the grain” type of person. I don’t follow trends. I will wait 4 years to watch a movie everyone is hyped over at that moment. My “unruly” response or my “down to earth” outbursts is why I am where I am today. Where is that? Its living in peace. Its being able to create the life I didn’t know I wanted by being my full authentic self. I have created a business full of unconventional/stereotypical ideas and practices. I thrive on being myself in whatever room I walk into. Working in corporate America for over 23 years has taught me that no matter where you are, you must show up as yourself or be prepared to be stuck in the never-ending cycle of image control. I can’t breathe in those spaces. I curse like a sailor while giving you an uplifting compliment. I may even curse you out but backdoor it with the shirt off my back. I am hard headed. It just works for me. I am a firm believer in what is for you will always be for you. Delayed does not mean denied.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My people love to eat!! You can’t have any Urban kick back without food and some alcohol! You sure better not have no alcohol and no food! Aht Aht! My gift is nurturing. I’m a healer through food. This can be someone getting a plate from me and end up talking about their life. It could be me cooking for people to come over and we end up having gut busting laughs and they end up leaving my home refreshed. My hands are not what they use to be so it has gotten harder to cook but my love language is Acts of Services and God makes a way for me to reach the people when I need to. I cook for the homeless in my city and every time I see anyone in need, they know they can always eat from me when they see me. I don’t charge those that are in need, and it seems that my supply is never ending. I joke and call myself the lady with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread! Literally, FISH TRAP’N is a fountain that will never go dry as long as I am doing what I am called to do. I just can’t wait to see what’s in store for us.

Through flexibility and accountability I am where I am today. The ways that I’ve had to pivot would break the average person down. Training my mind to be more flexible and think about different ways to turn events around takes great strength and character. I see most businesses fold under pressure because there is a packed house or long lines. I have trained myself to be in control at all times during my events. I let my staff know that in order to keep the retention we have to make sure we are still providing the best experience to each of our Custo’s. I let them know that a long line is a good line. It creates even longer lines from the word of mouth about their experience. In this role as CEO I find that accountability will always speak volumes to your integrity and people will come back for that same vibe and care they received.

Healing has been my inspiration. I have been through the fire and back! This journey has showed me so much of myself that I have been able to let go of things I never thought I would of. It helped me build and mold my true authentic self. I would always hide who I am (my friends would be shocked) because I am a live out loud person. I was just hiding my true power. I am the warrior, healer, and unruly person you would want on your team. Its so hard for African Americans to move past trauma and step into their light, I took the harder way and its time to reap the harvest. Keep watching Fish Trap’n. When I speak it, it comes to past!

Consistency and discipline are key players in the building of Fish Trap’n or any business for that matter. The lessons kicked my tail in 2022. Rather I’m being consistent on my recipes or trying to maintain my social media outlets it’s a lot to stay consistent with. It’s a lot of hard work and your mind is steadily going a mile a minute to reach newer heights in what you are building. Taking the time to relax and process next steps has taken a great deal of discipline for me. Being a highly functioning depressed person has its moments. If I sit to long, I become consumed thinking I’m not doing enough. In reality, I’ve done so much that my mind hadn’t had time to process all of the accomplishments or properly think out strategies. Remaining disciplined in the self-care department helps with my overall goal and much appreciated. Be sure to take those breaks.

We have some new things we are rolling out in 2023! We’ve accomplished so much along the way but we have higher heights to achieve. My best advice is to follow YOUR DREAM. Don’t let anyone tell you what is possible. Do it scared! Do it alone! Just do it! Make 2023 a NO EXCUSE year! Be great! You got this!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Now I am behind on the social night life but I know where to find some good food!!

On the weekends Fri-Sunday there are Farmer Markets in Carrollton where you can purchase straight from the locals and small businesses. Fish Trap’n sets up there on Sundays!

Monday-Wednesday there isn’t much to do but visit some good eating places or do some activities such as escape rooms, movies and or visit Klyde Warren Park where you have shopping and food trucks all around.
