We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Star and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It was one of the most natural and easy things I’ve done in the life. I also can’t imagine having any other job as fulfilling as being vocal coach.
I was born into a musical family with roots going back generations. At an early age, I found singing to be my ultimate passion.
I took lessons as early as possible, and was in choir, theater, piano & voice lessons and was offered a teaching position at only 16 years old at a music store in Keller, Texas.
My early teaching experience brought me face-to-face with two incredible little girls that were just beginning to find their voices, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez.
Watching their growth and success inspired my passion for working with artists and helping them develop their unique voices.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After years of nurturing this passion, I took a leap of faith and opened my own storefront that became a place where singers could explore their voices and grow as individual artists.
As time progressed, I developed a vision for something bigger. And his fate had it the opportunity came for me to expand my studio to the vibrant Dallas Arts District, which opened new doors.
I was instantly surrounded by creativity and inspiration. I felt invigorated and ready to take my teaching to the next level.
This is when I discovered Vocal Tapping. Within the next three years of research and testing with students all around the world, I’ve now scientifically proven this method, written an entire online course sold worldwide and introduced the new experience of singing with human touch
Before Vocal tapping, singers would use only their sense of sound and sight to hear a note and repeat it back or visualize a concept to sing OnPitch.
This method is for all ages and levels of singers and is easy to learn. You’ll find yourself able to easily sing on pitch, master seamless register transitions, and enhance power and clarity in your voice. You’ll also expand your range and hit notes you probably didn’t know you could hit.
This course includes the scientifically proven Vocal Meridian Chart, which s a map of your voice and defines where each note in your range is placed, above or below one of the main 6 curvatures of the bones on the face.
INTERESTED IN HOW THIS METHOD WORKS?
Here’s the science behind this method in simpler terms…
Where The Voice Flows:
Think of your voice like a stream of energy flowing in a specific direction, just like a jetstream in the air or a current in the ocean. Your body also has “streams” where it’s kinetic energy flows fastest and it’s located close to the surface of the skin. The voice flows along with the body’s kinetic energy.
Vocal Placement:
The voice flows within the body’s kinetic energy streams. In these streams there are hundreds of little pockets, about the size of a pencil eraser, where the energy and sound waves are placed or stop moving. These places are located above or below the curvature of a bone in the body. In Western Medicine these places are referred to as “Meridians” while in Eastern Medicine they have been known for thousands of years as “acupuncture points” & while singing they are referred to as vocal placement or more specifically the “24 Vocal Meridians” There are 24 vocal meridians used for singing. 7 on the crown of the head, 12 on the mask of the face and 5 below the chin.
Vocal Tapping on The 24 Vocal Meridians:
Vocal Placement has often been seen in the singing community as a mysterious concept but the Vocal Tapping Method has uncovered the exact science behind it using a tactile & kinesthetic approach. The singing community has always used ONLY 2 senses to sing…the sense of sound & the sense of imagination. The Vocal Tapping Method uses the sense of touch to direct every singing note to where it’s intended to be for every pitch. By tapping on the vocal meridians, singers draw each soundwave to the correct place, for every pitch.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM USING THIS METHOD?
Perfect Pitch:
Many singers struggle with hearing a pitch and reproducing it accurately. This method provides a specific destination for each pitch, allowing you to sing in perfect pitch.
Clarity Between Vocal Registers:
When you sing, your voice operates in three different registers: chest voice for low notes, mixed voice for slightly higher notes, and head voice for high notes. Often, transitioning between registers can be challenging.
With this method, your voice will find the right place for each note, ensuring a smooth and seamless performance, even when singing melodies that span across different registers.
Power & Clarity For High Notes:
Having the ability to belt out high pitches with power and clarity is every singer’s dream. This is achieved by placing your voice in the correct vocal meridian for each pitch. Vocal meridians are located in the area of your face known as the mask, and when your voice resonates there, you’ll experience clarity and power.
In summary, singers who use this method can hit high notes with strength and clarity, as they now have a reliable way to guide their voice to the right place.
Other Benefits:
The Vocal Tapping Method harmonizes the body’s energy flow, reduces physical and emotional tension, and optimize the physiological processes essential for effective vocal performance. This technique helps singers unlock their full potential by aligning their mind, body, and voice.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I enjoy spending my free time around art, culture and music. I would suggest going to downtown Dallas and the surrounding districts.
The Arts District has the world renowned Dallas Museum of Art as well as the Nasher Sculpture Center & The Trammell Crow Collection, as well as the Meyerson and the Winspear Opera House.
For live jazz music, I would suggest visiting the Balcony Club in Lakewood or Gingers in the East Quarter.
For lodging, I would suggest the luxurious Joule Hotel in the Historic District, and come listen to me sing on Friday evenings.
For brunch, my favorite place is Mercat Bistro in the Harwood neighborhood. Sushi at Kessaku and great dining views at Sky Blossom.
If you are a peacock lover, you can drive through a neighborhood just next to the Dallas zoo called Beckley Club and watch prides of peacocks roam through the enchanting streets filled with little fairytale village cottages.
For the past 10 years, every first Saturday of December, my students & I sing on a float in the Annual Dallas Holiday Parade. If you’re not in town, you can tune in on Television. (If you’re interested in performing as a student, visit StarVocalStudio.com)
Besides that, there’s so much new music to enjoy in Deep Ellum, which has a thriving music scene. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the talent & can say you definitely need to catch a Dirty Shirts, King Clam or Phantomelo concert.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am very grateful for my grandmother who was a successful children’s book author. She always believed in me and supported my music and creative projects.
